Hello students and parents!
My name is Felix and I am an experienced tutor who wants to help students to achieve their highest academic goals. I am a graduate from Bates College with a Bachelor's degree in biochemistry. I have experience tutoring both in college and in high school in chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Because of my academic and laboratory research experience, I have a practical and hands-on knowledge in these subjects, and with my extensive teaching experience I will make complicated material clear to understand and help you improve grades on tests and performance in class.
As a student in college I had to take many upper-level courses in biology and chemistry, as well as mathematics. I remember how I became a better student over time by understanding strategies for success in coursework and gaining a new perspective of the subject matter. While tutoring other students in and outside of school I came to develop tools and strategies to help them succeed.
My tutoring philosophy:
Regardless of what subject you are learning, you will do best in your class or course when you (1) have a map of what you need to know (2) you have mastered the theory and (3) the practical/hands-on skills that will let you get that A that you are aiming for.
These seem self-explanatory in retrospect, but many students struggle with one or more of these. I think of any course as a marathon along which you need to master key concepts and skills and demonstrate them over a series of tests/projects. I think of my role as your personal coach, helping you achieve your full potential in learning and in getting top grades.
Often many teachers or professors teach their material as if it is a long stream of information, not giving you a map of what is truly important and what is not. I have found that many of my students struggled with (1), which prevented them from studying effectively. Especially with more difficult classes, there is so much information in a subject that unless you know on what to spend your energy and time, you will study ineffectively and not know what you need to know on exam day.
We all have differences in how we learn and understand things. I work with students as individuals and always try to find the right approach for them. Some students understand things well but have difficulties using their knowledge on a real-time test. I give them strategies and techniques to help them. Others need help with concepts: some people learn better by analogies, while others like concrete examples. At the same time, some need a deep understanding of the material, while others understand the material but need practice in solving problems well.
I often find in chemistry and mathematics, especially, that people have a disconnect because they understand the material but don’t have the right mental dialogue when they see a new problem on the page in front of them. I don’t just give you more problem-sets but guide you in problem solving thinking. In biology courses you are faced with a lot of information to understand and to memorize and I helped many students through my creative mnemonics and by helping them build maps of the material they are studying.
Based on my extensive experience and my innovative approach to tutoring, I guarantee improvement in your grades, no matter what your level was before.
