I'm a school social worker, working in Newark. I'm open to meeting you and your student in your home, or a local library. I've been working with kids for a number of years and nothing comes close to the satisfaction of helping a student have that "Aha!" moment, whether it's academics, social or emotional.

I received my Master's in Social Work in 2008 and have always been interested in Mental Health and utilizing various methods to help achieve balance. I love playing chess, doing yoga, and art/music therapy as ways to help quiet the mind and focus attention. I love building relationships with children and families to help foster growth.

I'm extremely patient and very resourceful.
Contact me with questions, comments, recommended reading or any other requests!

I have joined WyzAnt to tutor Chess, K-6, and other alternatives.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

For the past 5 years, I have been working with students and families who have been diagnosed with ADHD/ADD. It can be a complicated disorder to get a grasp on, but with the use of specific tools and routines, students can learn to recognize their strengths and weaknesses and implement strategies to help tackle their academic obstacles, as well as streamline their home routines.

Chess

I have taught chess in schools for 4 years and am primarily focused on teaching beginners. Aspects include pieces/movements (material), openings (center control and mobility), check and checkmate, and other various strategies and techniques. This winter marks the start of my school's first Chess Club, for which I am the adviser.

Psychology

Studied psychology and social work in college and still very involved in continuing education courses in these fields which are very much blended together. Ask me about subject-specifics (Human Behavior/Development, etc) or more general study skills for these topics.

Spelling

If your student needs help with spelling, I will first establish a baseline of ability and then determine the appropriate interventions, while also giving you, the parent, the tools necessary to reinforce the skills we practice in tutoring sessions.
