I have been enjoying working with students to improve their writing skills for many years and in a variety of settings. I taught the freshman writing course at Rutgers, and I have been teaching English Composition at Brookdale Community College for six years. I know what the colleges are looking for in their writing students. I have tutored high school students and college students. I have also tutored a fifth grader and a Masters Degree candidate.
A sense of humor is vital for a teacher of writing. Most of the time my students enjoy themselves as we work to create writing that is expressive, coherent, and correct -- and once in a while, graceful and moving. I encourage my students to explore the world about them and to become proficient at describing it. Students also respond well as they learn to compose persuasive essays.
Writing is basic to human communication. People who write well are assured of advantages in the academic world, the work world, and the personal world. I firmly believe that anyone can learn to write and to write well.
