I am a semi-retired electrical engineer and part time math adjunct teacher at a local college who immensely enjoys teaching, either one-to-one or in a class. I have found that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach that really works for math, and that students frequently see math problems in quite different ways. Rather than strictly following the standard, text-book methods, my approach is first to learn how the student is thinking about the problem, and teach the material from that viewpoint.
