Scholastic/Work/Tutoring Experience Summary:
As a college student, I tutored several college students as a part of my work study requirement in the subjects of math and science. In fact, I met and tutored my wife while she was in college. She received a B+ in chemistry with my help and eventually became a RN/BSN with my help in not only subject matter support but also time management support and study skills assistance. This aspect of my life was merely a continuation of successful and fun experiences that I was introduced to in high school when I began tutoring math and science. So, you can say that I have been tutoring most of my childhood. After college, life events led me to become a teacher at a Christian private middle school where I discovered my life calling of teaching. During this experience, in addition to teaching numerous students and inspiring a many of young urban children to enter some very competitive high schools and colleges, I would also create and develop an after school tutorial program. As for those students that I inspired through my teaching and tutoring, in addition to being responsible for these students attending some very prestigious colleges and universities (their words not mine), I have had a student who has lectured as an undergraduate at Yale University as well as had a student that aspired to become a teacher of mathematics. Both of these students have stated that my inspiration was a direct reason for these endeavors. Throughout my experiences as a teacher and an administrator in private middle schools and high schools as well as public high schools, I have always challenged my students to reach to academic levels beyond what they thought they could. This was not only illustrated by my numerous nominations to Whose Who Among America's Teachers, two Teacher in Excellence Awards (from two of three past employers) or my other promotions and accomplishments but also in the sense of accomplishment that most of my students carried with them after they completed and passed my courses. Mathematics has always been a love of mine for not only its precision but also its structure and discipline. My specialties are two-fold: 1) I have an extensive math teaching/tutoring background and the ability to share this in an effective way with children; 2) I have personal and professional experience working with children of all ages that are having difficulty getting what they need out of the classroom; and 3) these experiences consist of great success illustrated by the accomplishments of these students.
Tutoring Style:
Whatever subject I tutor or teach, I am receptive to what the student illustrates explicitly or implicitly about their understanding of the subject area in question. I see the student's difficulty with the subject area as a consequence of other problem areas. Hence in addition of teaching the subject area, I also teach time management, study skills as well as reading as it relates to the problem area subject (i.e. math, science, English, writing, etc.). Primarily, when teaching math but also attributed to other subject areas, an approach that is step by step where everything is illustrated and very little is left unspoken between me and my student, is how I approach improving my student's abilities. I believe in pre-testing and post-testing testing as a means to illustrate that the student has grown in their understanding of the subject matter not merely the completion of an assignment or task. I am completely thorough all that I do with your child in making sure that your child has a full understanding of the material and the ability to apply said understanding to the subject matter that had previously gave your child difficulty.
