LANGUAGE - English, French, Russian, Spanish
I have always been interested in languages and culture and have studied French, Spanish, and Russian in University. I also had the opportunity to live abroad (France, Argentina, Russia) for periods ranging from 4 months to several years and study the languages more in depth. My levels are as follow: French - Advanced, Russian - Intermediate, Spanish - Intermediate. I can help students with grammar, pronunciation, speaking, and reading.
I have also worked for 5 years as a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) instructor with students of all ages (3-75). Some of this teaching has been in special English learning centers, some in foreign based schools, and some as private lessons.
I tailor my methods to the student and what they want to work on. In any language learning process, I highly value communication. Therefore, speaking always plays a large role as it is most often the most difficult aspect in learning a new language and often neglected. Learning language is very natural and I try to imitate how a child learns their maternal tongue by doing lots of listening and speaking exercises. I also include grammar and reading for those who already have a sufficient understanding of how language works (a.k.a, not for young children).
I am able to help young learners read music, pronounce foreign languages, sing, and learn piano.
I studied vocal performance, both as a soloist and in ensembles or choirs, for several years, starting in middle school and continuing with a concentration in music in University. I have competed and placed in various competitions. I have studied piano on and off since I was a child and would enjoy the opportunity of sharing the joy with those interested. I am only comfortable teaching beginners.
I have had the opportunity to perform in many theatrical shows over the years. Many of these were during middle and high school as well as community theater and in University. These productions have ranged from children's theater to musicals to operas. In addition to performing on stage, I've also done voice recordings for radio shows and audio guides. Playing a role on stage is fun, but I also have experience on the other side as director, set designer, and speech supervisor. I directed and designed the set for a high school musical when the director was diagnosed with cancer after just casting the roles. I worked as a speech supervisor to encourage clear pronunciation and enunciation with many speaking drills in addition to various acting exercises.
Living abroad, I got tired of paying for over-priced clothing of poor quality and decided to make my own. It was cheaper, I was good at it, and it was fun! Making your own clothes or items to decorate a home or office can be very rewarding. I'd gladly teach someone how to use a sewing machine for simple stitches to create clothing, bags, curtains, or anything else their heart desires. I am still learning my way around this interesting field and so my rate would be lower for sewing than in my other fields of expertise.
