Hello! As a teacher and professor with 15 years of tutoring experience, I am a total geek about learning and teaching. I'm NJ certified in English, Special Ed and Math, with ten years of experience teaching secondary school and college. I also have my MFA in writing from Warren Wilson College and am a published author. I love to read, write, I love Math, and I love the joys of teaching.
My dual certification and extensive training allows me to work effectively with all skill levels and ages. I do not have a one size fits all approach; I assess each student and use individualized techniques to help students achieve their goals. Also, as a professional teacher, I work well with youngsters, teens and young adults adults, from special needs to honors. I really enjoy helping students learn and succeed. An added benefit to my being a teacher is that I'm familiar with the inner workings of a school system and how to most effectively navigate it. I've helped many students and parents navigate the bewildering maze of college admissions, testing strategies, essay writing, and regular class assignments (which can be confusing!).
I'm also experienced as a college admissions and admissions essay coach. I've successfully coached students get into: Williams, Northwestern, UPenn, NYU, Rowan Engineering, Air Force Academy, RPI, Rutgers-Camden Nursing program, University of Florida, University of Miami, Florida State, and many other colleges. For students who wish to go to community college, I can also help prepare for Accuplacer and the GED.

I teach a wide range of students, from honors, college aged and adults. My specialty in special ed is Asperger's/Autism Spectrum and ADHD. For instance, I helped one of my students with Asperger's increase his SAT score in English by 300 points. For honors and elite students, I help with scholarships, private and elite colleges, My successes have included NMF and Commended Scholars. If such a scholarship is possible, I recommend starting tutoring early.
I also help with college admission essays, which can be a deal breaker in the process.
I've helped many students reach their dreams and beyond. I have helped raise scores from 100-300 points per subject test. With my tutoring, students feel more confident about themselves. Overall, I teach learning strategies, organization and self-assessment, self-advocacy, and many reading and writing skills.
Areas of expertise: SAT/ACT, college essays and applications, homework coaching and organization, learning strategies for the learning disabled, essay writing and revision, manuscript and essay feedback and editing, and reading and writing strategies at all levels.
I've had a lot of success in tutoring both ACT & SAT, and I can help you determine which test plays to your strengths and your goals. If you need extended time, I can also help you navigate the system. I'm a published author, college and high school teacher, and I LOVE reading and writing! I got a perfect score on the English Praxis. I help give you confidence and help you with test taking strategies that work for you.
As a teacher certified in Special Ed, I have successfully tutored students with Asperger's on every academic level from Inclusion to Honors. I am trained in helping the student break down lessons into components he or she can more easily process. I particularly assist students in learning inferencing and social cues in their reading, interpreting and socializing.
I have successfully counseled many students for college, particularly strategies on best matches and help on essays. College acceptances include: Williams, NYU, Northwestern, Swarthmore, Rutgers Nursing, Rowan Engineering, RPI, AIr Force Academy. I work with the student closely to help determine his/her personal strengths and then we work on revisions of the essay until we're satisfied. Ultimately, it's important for the essay to be in his/her own voice, not mine. Essays are a critical part of he application that many students overlook. I can also help with the overall submission materials as well as any aspect of the college process.
I am a NJ certified Special Ed teacher. I earned a 4.0 from Rider's Graduate program for Endorsement for Students with Disabilities.
I have experience tutoring students for successful placement in their private school of choice, including the Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) and the Jack Barrack Hebrew Academy in Philly. As with SATs and PSATs, I target the student's particular areas of weakness and strengths and go from there. I focus on reviewing the subject matter on the test, on test taking skills specific to SSAT, and on overall confidence and goal setting.
As a teacher dual certified in Special Ed and English, I have a great deal of experience helping students with organizational skills. I've taught Study Skills classes and am experienced with many needs. My ultimate goal is to help the student become self sufficient and organized for life.
I've been teaching writing for over 10 years now and am a published author as well. I've taught everything from college composition and higher level writing to honors/AP English to middle school and self-contained writing. I work with all levels and abilities; I meet the student where they are, and work with them on an individual level.
As a teacher myself, I"m also skilled at getting standardized, SAT and SSAT test scores up for those interested.
