I will help you apply certain techniques you will feel comfortable and confident using over and over again, no matter the situation.

Reading

Reading efficiently is one of the biggest keys to academic success. Learners who read well often score higher on assignments, tests, and standardized exams. They also tend to write well and exhibit increased confidence in the classroom. I help students break down the reading process so they understand exactly how structure and context work. We work on both mechanics and comprehension in order to achieve well-rounded results.

Theatre

I've been a theater professional for over 6 years and have a myriad of experience both in the business and in the classroom. I have an extensive backround in classical drama and in Shakespeare specifically. Because I've lived and breathed drama for so long, I have a knack for making it accessible and fun for my students. Shakespeare, for example, is meant to be *seen and heard*, not just read. I teach the rhythm and musicality of the verse because the pentameter is crucial in unlocking its meaning. This allows my students to understand the words in a greater context and suddenly, the aniquated language doesn't seem so intimidating and/or boring. I have them read the soliloquies out loud, get on their feet and perform short scenes, and in some cases, watch versions of the plays on DVD. I enjoy making Shakespeare a "team sport". We all play our parts, so to speak, and together we shed light on 400 years of dramatic history. My students are always surprised to find how current Shakespeare's themes and plot points really are. I sincerely hope to give them a greater understanding of their performance value. Plays, after all, come alive in production.

As for audition technique and general knowledge of the business, I think you'll find me an excellent resource. I endeavor to pass along the many experiences I've gathered and offer guidance for young actors as well as for those simply curious about the dramtic form. I am a working, union stage-actress, and I say that very proudly. It isn't easy to make a life in the arts, but I've done it and taught others how to do the same.

Finally, I've studied and seen theater abroad in Paris, London, and Galway. The European style is very different from ours, and I believe it's tremendously important for my students to be exposed to international theater and understand we aren't the only ones performing plays... the dramatic traditions of countries like France and Ireland, for example, are profoundly rich and exciting. Theater doesn't happen in a bubble. It's a breathing form, influenced by time and cultural perspective.

I look forward to working with you and wish you all the best in your studies!

Vocabulary

A fine, well-rounded grasp of vocabulary not only helps in all areas of academics but improves reading comprehension, reading rate, and writing skills. I teach students how to break down words, put them in context, and avoid rote memorization whenever possible. This ultimately sharpens long-term memory and increases retention tenfold.

Writing

I have been tutoring Writing both privately and through various companies for over 10 years and can help your student raise his/her grades in English class, assist with writing papers, or help begin preparing college/scholarship essays. I am a formerly Certified Teacher (7 years in NY State, grades 7 - 12).
