I tutored in High School via the school Key Club (this was unpaid) and on my own. I have also been a certified Red Cross babysitter since I was 11 yrs old. I have also tutored both male and females. I have worked on just getting homework accomplished to improving on general skills as well as study habits.
I graduated a year early from the George Washington University with a B. A. in Art History and Archaeology with a Minor in Film Studies. I specialize in Language arts History or Social Studies, and Spanish (I am fluent). I have no immediate plans to go into education however, I have always loved tutoring. I also try keep in weekly contact with teachers to see how your child is progressing with my tutelage. This also helps in learning what I can do to change my methods in order to better serve your student. If you are in the Chatham area, I went through the school system, starting at Washington Avenue through Chatham High School graduating in 2009. I am familiar with most of the teachers and love to share my own stories with my students; I feel this helps in getting them to be more comfortable with me. I am willing to bring extra work (in the form of workbooks) to supplement your child's needs as well.

A Typical Day with Me:
-A typical session for me lasts between 1 and 1/2 hours-2 hours
-An agenda check; to see the weeks assignments
-We work on getting the daily homework done. This is done on a basis of importance and due date. I expect that the student does the assignment independently first then I review it and work out their mistakes
-Activities to work on the skills that need improvement
-Preparing or studying for the tests; this might take precedence over homework. This could also be used as a time to work on a major project and prepare its presentation.
-I am a huge fan of extra credit that could help develop these skills outside of homework and encourage teachers to send that home with the students. (this is case by case)
-I want the student to feel comfortable with me so often at the end of the session I let them draw, color, play a game to reward them for hard work it also gives them a chance to talk about things that they find important outside of school work.
For extra session time outside of the weekly or biweekly meeting I am willing to Skype.
I am also an avid painter and drawer if your child needs help with art or art projects in any way, although not listed in my subjects, I can most certainly help with Art Class Work.
American History is taught for most of elementary school. Starting with the States around 3rd grade, which I have tutored and ending with civics in 8th grade. I have tutored 7th grade which covers 19-20,21st century America. It is the History of our nation and I would be more than willing to guide my students through it. Both my Majors and Minor in college dealt with history extensively.
Archaeology was my second major in college. While most people automatically call to mind Indiana Jones when they hear archaeology; that example is more related to grave robbing and forging artifacts.(Haha) What I do is Study ancient people and their cultures. I am by no means a expert in the typical sense, as I have yet to go to grad school, but I know a few things. My expertise is in Biblical, Greek/Roman, and Egyptian as this was the breath covered for my Bachelors degree. I have also studied Historical archaeology(think American slaves) and New World Archaeology(Think Maya; my first dig was in Belize studying the Maya), but these are not my favorite. I also have knowledge of theory and political/laws that might concern archaeology and appropriation of artifacts. While I have no plans to tutor in this subject I include this for my World History students.
I have loved art since I was 3 years old. I was rather strange in that any book in the library of my elementary school, having to do with art was checked out, at least twice by me. I gobbled up the life stories of Picasso, Monet, and Warhol instantly. This not only instilled a love of history in me, but also made me a passionate museum lover; to see paintings in person is such a rush! Inevitably, this is why I majored in Art History in college. I loved 16th century(especially royal portraiture), but I am also well versed in American Art and Architecture as well as Greek and Roman Art and Architecture. This is not a subject I plan to tutor in, but my background helps me with Elementary School Subjects like Art(Your still life drawing has a story to tell.),History or Social Studies(You wouldn't believe what kind of things the fan in the queens hand is trying to say about the world she lives in.), and For my sixth graders learning Mythology in LanArts I bet I can name the God by looking at him and with my help you can too!
I am an Elementary School tutor. I have tutored 3 students for a year at a time each. They were in grades 2,3, and 7. My most recent tutoring job, which I found through WyzAnt, was a 4th grade language arts student. In addition, as a babysitter since age 11 I have been a homework helper for the kids I care for and they have been in K-7. So I am very familiar with Elementary school work. Fractions, multiplying, subtraction, adding, dividing I have done it all. Mostly with the kids I babysat for; especially with my third grade girl. While I offer up to 7th grade with most subjects, math is not my strong suit, and thus I will not be offering my services past the 6th grade.
Science is how we can explain why things occur in our world. Whether it is man-made or natural I can guarantee Science has something to do with it and that is why learning about science is so Fun! From Clouds in Kindergarten to Mitosis in 7th grade I have tutored it all at some point in my key club career. Granted at a very basic level, but doing experiments and projects will be much easier if I am around. Archaeology, my second major, in college was also a science. Collecting qualitative and quantitative data as well as recording every thing we saw on our dig was the only way to hypothesizes what might have happened in the past. When your child starts to learn the Scientific process these things and much more will be at the core of what they are learning.
English is literature, grammar, writing, spelling, and vocabulary combined. It is the basis of how we come to execute and understand the language that is spoken in the united states. In elementary school this is considered language arts and perhaps is a better description of English as a taught subject because it is learning the arts of the language. To write a paragraph you must first write a sentence. To write a sentence well you must punctuate it and make sure you have got things like your adverbs in the right place. People want to know that you can make sense and this is done through grammar. Sentence fragments, punctuation mistakes, and much more can be easily avoided with my help. The Greats. When I was young Mark Twain was my hero. He led me to other greats that enriched my understanding of the world immensely. While literature is not a topic covered in elementary school. As an elementary school tutor in language arts and reading, Phonics, or a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters, is one of the skills I worked on extensively with my second grader. She struggled with reading as a result of a learning disability. To guarantee true reading successes and a better understanding of language learning that a word, letter, or phrase can be phonetically recognized is fundamental.
I have been in theater since age twelve and I was also on my speech and debate team back in high school. I won 12th place in the state finals out of 300 for my original oratory. Being on the team also required me to coach my peers in order to prepare for competition. I have also directed numerous productions and a skill is to work on diction.
To write well you must learn how to equally read well. Improving reading skills is something I have worked on a 2nd,3rd, 4th,and 7th grade level. If you have read through my other descriptions these are the grades I have tutored for an entire year and that is why I refer to them often. In the past I have worked on sounding out words in easy readers or picture books, as well as comprehension of simple paragraphs to comprehension of full books. I have also worked on understanding plot, structure,character motivations, symbolism, and much more. When I was 11 I started volunteering with my local library during the summer reading program. My job was to listen to elementary school students tell me about the book they read. I developed an ear for picking up on how a child's comprehension of the book they read could be broadened by asking the right questions. At around 15 my sister and I developed a story time program at the library where kids would come and listen to us read some of our favorite childhood books. During this time we would in engage our listeners with questions in between the reading of the books. Questions like,"Has that ever happened to you?", "Do you know what happens next?" with every answer we would guide them to a fuller understanding of the story as well as introduce reading related words such as, Foreshadowing; to hopefully help in future reading endeavors as a way to better express themselves. I am also in the process of getting my own Children's Book Published.
I am a fluent Spanish Speaker because my mother is Cuban and I was taught the language in my home. I also studied it all through high school. I am willing to teach this at an elementary level. I can focus on basic vocab words, basic conversation, and better basic sentence plus reading comprehension.
Spelling although rooted in Vocabulary, because you need a word to spell, is also a concept that must be grasped separately. Why do the letters come together the way they do? What do the letters look like or sound like together? How can your student get away from just memorizing the word? How can they guarantee that they will spell it right every time? These are things I have worked on in the past with my Third and Forth grade students as their struggles were mostly in the spelling, writing, grammar areas, but they are things I believe can be worked on at all of the elementary school levels. I intend to offer my services with these topics in K-7 despite my past experience.
For my Third Grader, that I tutored for a year, getting organized to study posed a real challenge. With him I worked on developing his study skills. For me this included: practicing memorization with flash cards, creating games that would utilize critical thinking and answering on the fly, and also just staying on top of his assignments in order prove to him how much daily work really did aide retaining test knowledge. We also worked on developing the ways he learned best. He was very much a visual learner so often in preparation for spelling tests, for example, we would have him write out the word multiple times as well as draw an accompanying picture to make sure he grasped the definition of the word. In summation, I define study skills as: getting my student to explore the different approaches to studying(this is not exclusive to tests) for school; in hopes that he/she can develop the techniques necessary to fit their unique learning needs and guarantee future success.
If I have taught writing you can bet I have taught Vocabulary. I am the master(in my opinion) at making spelling tests, definition tests, homonyms, synonyms, homophones, etc... Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun! I have tutored this at an elementary school level previously, but I am sure I can extend my help into middle school. Vocab might also be something you see outside of your language arts class like on your social studies test. I can help with this kind of vocab too.
My Dad often says that if you can write well you can do anything. I truly believe this statement and I believe that writing well starts at the elementary level. I have worked with all my students (2nd,3rd, 4th, and 7th) on improving their writing skills. This includes forming complete thoughts, concise sentences, improving sentence structure, building paragraphs, and eventually the building essays that are often required on higher level tests as well as in class. In high school I wrote speeches for speech and debate club, the literary magazine, and the newspaper something I continued for college. In college I wrote for the blog at the contemporary gallery that I interned at for 2 years. I am also an aspiring children's book author so aside from more academic style writing I can also help with creative writing.
