Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

If you need a tutor for public speaking then contact me. I have suggestions as well as practice strategies beyond what an Internet search provides. Internet tips are helpful. Yet having a tutor is vital. I provide a practice audience and preparation strategies. Preparation strategies will vary per student based on a multiple intelligence inventory and the results will be given, evaluated, explained, and discussed during the first tutoring session. From this inventory, strategies will be determined, attempted, and honed during subsequent tutoring sessions. As a public speaker tutor I will assist with public speaking rather than public performance, i.e. acting. Stage fright for acting and public speaking nervousness are radically different and I distinguish between them. Please contact me with any questions you may have.

Reading

All activities are more natural when the content is preferred. Reading is not an exception.

At first, I meet with students and focus on acquiring and improving skills not only through areas of interest but also through learning style and multiple intelligence inventories.

For example, students may be interested in snowboarding or sewing thus providing reading opportunities within a content area of interest through the proclivities determined in the inventories.

Within tutoring sessions, not only is preferred content used for reading improvement but also academic content based on the units being taught at school and homework assigned.

Social Studies

Using my thematic social studies toolkit adapted from state curriculum students learn and hone concepts from Constructivist principles. Taking what students already know, they develop content knowledge and critical thinking skills for essay writing, projects, and of course process of elimination skills for multiple choice questions not only for state and district testing but also their teachers' assessment OF learning in real time in conjunction with their teachers' assessment FOR learning over time. Tutoring can focus on school topic content alone or it can focus on thematic concepts alone or a mixture can be provided based on the student's needs and the parent/guardian preferences. Excerpts of the toolkit can be provided. It is a multidisciplinary toolkit aiding in Social Studies/History as well as English/Language Arts. In addition to the toolkit, vocabulary assistance is provided through thematic connective and Constructivist theory/principles/practice. Finally, social studies tutoring also includes study tactics when and where necessary for individual students. Please contact me with any questions you may have.
