Hi! I am a high school math teacher who has also has experience teaching middle school math. I was in a middle school where I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math to students. I believe in stressing the basic facts and having students know the basics before they can move on. In this small middle school, I was the only full time math teacher. In 2 years, I doubled the number of students in the "Advanced Proficient" range on the NJ ASK. I taught middle school mathematics and I also taught Algebra 1 to the exceptional math students in middle school.
After 3 years, I moved onto a high school and started to tutor students in many different math classes. I have taught General Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Trigonometry. I have also tutored and taught an SAT Math review class where one of my students improved 200 points on the math section! In addition to the SAT math section, I have also tutored students on the SAT II's, the ACT Math section, and the HSPA's.
My belief is that all students can learn and we just need to find in which way they learn best. I like to bring in real-world applications whenever I can to answer the "Where are we going to use this?" question. I have also coached a number of sports including football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. I like to reach a level with the student so we both feel at ease working on the math and I explain it in a way so that they will understand it. I also have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
I enjoy working with students. The best feeling I have is when I leave a tutoring session, and I know the student has a better understanding of the material now than they did before. I feel that with my easy going nature and a way to explain things so students will learn, students will gain more confidence in math and become better students.
