My name is Steve. I hold a bachelors degree cum laude in English from Rutgers University. I am an award-winning journalist, published author, and experienced classroom teacher.

Whether teaching elementary school students to find hidden truths in fiction, or coaching inexperienced reporters in shaping their stories, I know how to keep people focused on their goals in a firm but gentle manner. I am the author of a critically praised work of history called "The Last Three Miles: Politics, Murder, and the Construction of America's First Superhighway," published in 2007 by The New Press. My second nonfiction book, "American Dictators," will be published in 2013 by Rutgers University Press.

I am certified as a substitute teacher in the New Jersey school districts of Cinnaminson, Delran, and Edgewater Park, and have taught at all levels of K-12 students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a published author, freelance journalist, and classroom teacher, I have learned how to be comfortable speaking to large groups of people. I have dealt with hostile and indifferent audiences as well as friendly and engaged ones, and I have been a featured guest on National Public Radio and other venues, where I learned how to gently but firmly keep my goals in mind without becoming combative with the host. I can show my students how to keep their cool and not get thrown off stride by questions, how to organize their materials for the most effective presentation, and how to get the most out of what can be a genuinely enjoyable experience.
