I have long had an interest in children with learning disabilities. During my three years working for both the Devereux Foundation and the Network for Behavior Change, I experienced the reward of helping students with special needs progress by employing such methodologies as Behavior Modification Plans and Charts, Study Island, Picture Exchange Communication and Board Maker software, as well as collaborating with the Treatment Team.
This practical experience later served to enhance my Special Education training and professional teaching experience for the Tewksbury School District, where I effectively bridged theory to application by employing movement-based and hands-on instruction in Inclusion classrooms ranging from grades 5-8, as well as in a Resource Room setting consisting of Fourth and Fifth graders on multiple academic skill levels.
Furthermore, I worked as a Home Bound Instructor for a student with behavioral/academic issues this past winter. I also collaborated with other teachers and child study team members to modify instruction and materials as per individual needs, often using technology to help make abstract concepts more meaningful to students. Some of these technologies included the Smart Exchange, Quia, Starmatica, the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, and Smart Board Notebook files I created. Additionally, I created a Literature Circles program and led Writer’s Workshop activities on a daily basis during my Student Teaching Placement. All of these experiences leave no doubt and constantly reinforce that my calling is to work with children with learning disabilities as well as those with other behavioral, social, and emotional needs.

During the first tutoring session, Kyle took the time to asses my son's learning capabilities and style before coming up with a plan. This seems to be boosting my son's confidence level every week since he is not jumping to topics he is not ready to grasp.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working with children for six years, and teaching for three. I have taught from grade three to grade eight in several different capacities. Before I pursued teaching, I worked alongside children with behavioral issues, so I am experienced with ADHD and anxiety.
I come from a Special Education background and am currently working in Special Education, so I am proficient in making work more manageable and less overwhelming for students. My Special Education background focused heavily on teaching Math and Literacy to Special Needs students.
I am very experienced and very comfortable with this content; Math and Language Arts are definitely my strengths. I performed exceptionally on the Math portion of my Praxis II and passed the Middle School Language Arts and Social Studies Praxis. Additionally, I taught Eighth Grade last year and am working tutoring an adult with Aspergers, so I am comfortable with the age group and the content. I may need to brush up on French, but still could help him come up with Study Strategies for any subject. Most of my time last year was spent helping Special Education students develop study strategies that worked best for them.
I currently teach Special Education and have done so for the last three years. I have spent a great deal of time assisting students, finding ways that help them study best based on their learning style. Some of these strategies include graphic organizers and word association strategies, among other things.
