Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have professional experience writing and editing. I consistently score 35-36 on practice tests. I have extensive experience tutoring both SAT and ACT writing. There are certain grammar rules that you need to know, and once you do this test is easy. I have helped many students make extremely large improvements in writing.

ACT Math

ACT Math is different from SAT math in that it covers more advanced math similar to what the student learned in school. The problems are less tricky. I find out what areas the student is weak in, and teach them and assign problems in those areas. I know the material thoroughly, and recently scored a perfect 36 on this test. I consistently get great results.

Algebra 1

If a student is having trouble in Algebra I, usually it is a problem with dealing with abstract concepts and/or not having understand prealgebra material. For abstractness issues, I explain concepts in concrete terms the student can understand. If the student doesn't understand basic concepts, I work with them on the earlier material they need as well as the current assignments.

Algebra 2

If a student is having trouble in Algebra II, it often means their Algebra I is weak. In that case I will help the student with the basic concepts they need for current assignments. Often students have problems with abstract concepts, in which case I explain them in concrete terms that the student can understand.

American History

I am mainly a math tutor, but I scored 800 on my SAT subject test in American History, and minored in history in college. I have tutored many students in history, and really like the subject.

Calculus

Calculus is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I know the material thoroughly, including the more advanced material for college classes and the BC exam.

If a student is having trouble in calculus, it often means they missed something in earlier classes. In that case I will help the student with the basic concepts they need for current assignments.

GED

Have helped students pass the math GED. I teach the math on the test. I also help the student with test taking approaches and study skills. Most students preparing for the GED are motivated but do not know how to prepare. In addition to tutoring them, I help them study on their own.

Geometry

If a student is having problems in geometry, it is usually do to difficulty with proofs, difficulty with visualization, or general weakness in math. In addition to helping the student with current assignments, I will help them overcome the general problems I identify.

Prealgebra

It is important that a student understands prealgebra in order to be successful in later math and science classes. I have helped several students do well in prealgebra and created a strong foundation for the future.

Precalculus

I know all the precalculus material perfectly, including honors precalculus. I helped a student improve from D-F to A- in precalculus by the end of the year. I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins and current 790 math SATs.

PSAT

It is important to start early with SAT tutoring. A student can usually improve combined scores by 100 points without tutoring or preparation. With the right approach, I can usually help students improve by over 300 points.

I have extensive experience in PSAT and SAT tutoring. I can score 78-80 in all sections. I use the approach of teaching the student the math that is on the test. Also, I use problems gotten wrong to work on areas that need to be improved. I am very thorough and get amazing results.

SAT Math

I have tutored many students in the math SAT and usually get at least a 100 point increase. I have a math degree from Johns Hopkins and current 790 math SATs. I teach the math that is on the math SAT. I go over the type of problems that the student has challenges with, and make sure the student can get those problems correct. I teach various test taking techniques.

SAT Reading

I recently scored 790 on SAT Reading, and have extensive experience tutoring it and get great results. I take a systematic approach, using material such as "The Critical Reader" and real SATs. I teach the students methods for approaching sentence completion problems, and guide their study of vocabulary.

SAT Writing

I have professional experience writing and editing, and recently scored 770 in SAT writing. SAT writing is the easiest part to improve your score on. I have helped several students improve by more than 200 points in writing, primarily by just correcting basic grammar errors. I use "The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar" and real SATs.

SSAT

Helped several students prepare for the SSAT. Can tutor all sections and levels.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry combines concepts from algebra and geometry. If a student is having trouble in trigonometry, the student usually is missing fundamentals of trigonometry or earlier math. I will help them with the fundamentals they need for their current assignments.
