I am bi-lingual in English and German. Have been teaching the languages for 17+ years in two language schools and on a freelance basis. Before tutoring, I worked in a large international corporation for a number of years. I gained the corporate life experience and associated with various business people.

Over the years I have had students of different ages, backgrounds, professional levels and nationalities. Have taught beginners as well as more advanced students on a one-on-one basis or in very small groups. My native language is German. When I moved to New Jersey, I needed to learn English to be able to attend school and to communicate. Because of that, I understand that it can sometimes be difficult and also confusing to learn and understand another language. Whether I’m teaching the American English or German, we speak and read the language being learned so that a student becomes accustomed to the sound of the new language and becomes comfortable speaking it. And, yes there are explanations if there is confusion or no understanding. This works quite well. Have found that when people understand why or how they say something, it makes it much easier to learn. My focus is always on areas that are important to the student.

Thoroughly enjoy teaching others and learning from them. I am a patient, calm and fun-loving person. And I also enjoy classes that are interesting and fun. I always laugh with my students, not at them! I like to share my knowledge of the English language and the German one with others including idiomatic expressions that I find are often used and are difficult to understand. My greatest satisfaction is having a student looking forward to a class, making progress and feeling comfortable speaking, reading and writing the new language.

I believe that knowing another language and learning about other cultures are very important in the global environment we have today.

Am available during the day and willing to travel to your home or office. If we are quite a distance from each other, we could meet at a library that is convenient to both of us.

Will travel up to 25 miles, but there are occasions when I’m willing to travel further.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching English for 17+ years in two language schools and on a freelance basis. Over the years I have had students of different ages, backgrounds, and from various countries. Some have been beginners and others more advanced students. I have had students for whom English was the second language and others who spoke two or three languages already.

During class we speak and read in English so that a student becomes accustomed to the sound of the language and becomes comfortable speaking it. If there is confusion or no understanding, I give explanations. And I’m good at what we call show and tell. I’ll show you something and tell you about it. If necessary, time is spent to help the student with pronunciation.

I always find out what is important to a person, what their hobbies are, what they like and what they like to do. It’s good to build the class around that. In addition, in my experience, there have often been discussions about the culture of this country versus theirs. That always helps a person tremendously in feeling more at ease living in this country and associating with other people.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and like to make the classes interesting and fun. The best part for me is seeing a student making progress and becoming more self-confident in speaking English.

Proofreading

I have a meticulous eye for proofreading and extensive experience in proofreading of contracts, educational material and other documents. Also I have the ability to edit original copy for accuracy, syntax, grammar, spelling and punctuation. I can proofread online as well as hard copies of documents. And have the first-rate ability to find errors and inconsistencies in simple to complex printed/online documents of text or numbers.

I can show others what to do to proofread any document.

Reading

I am experienced in working on a one-on-one basis and have worked with a number of students. I am a very patient tutor and good at helping with pronunciation. Have been very successful in helping students and they have become more confident and are able to read better.

Writing

From working in an international corporation for a number of years, I have extensive experience writing letters, memos and reports. Since I started tutoring, I have helped a number of students writing various documents, including e-mails. Many people find it difficult to organize their thoughts, use grammar correctly and appropriate vocabulary. I help them formulate their ideas and write clearly and effectively.
