All my teaching was in the Everett Public Schools - Everett, Massachusetts.
I also did a brief private tutoring job for a young girl with learning disabilities that turned out to be too severe and numerous for my level of expertise.
However, I did develop a close relationship with my tutee.
I consider myself to be well-traveled and well-read. I believe those are assets in nurturing communication between teacher and student.
Although I have been retired for several years, I believe I can still contribute to the tutoring and educational process.

Although my teaching career was in Secondary Education, I did tutor a young girl with learning issues for about 3 years. She was 5 years old when I started tutoring her. The major thing I learned is that basic principles of teaching can be applied to ANY grade level as long as the APPROACH is appropriate. I taught grades 7-12 for 27 years in a self-contained classroom.
I have taught Language Arts to students in grades 7-12, and although I did not teach them the "art" of handwriting, I did teach them to write legibly. Back when I was in the 7th grade we had a separate class in Penmanship and I feel I remember enough of the basics to teach handwriting now.
During my 27 years of teaching Language Arts, I did teach Public Speaking to 7th graders.
My goals were to hae them communicate to an audience and to develop self-confidence.
I also took a Public Speaking course in college and the skills that I learned in that course helped me in my teaching style.
Because I taught grades 7-12 for 27 years in a self-contained classroom, I had a set of study skills that I urged my students to follow. One of these was the use of index cards. For vocabulary review they would write the word on 1 side and the definition on the other side. In flipping through the pile of cards they would separate the words they knew from the words they did NOT know. They would concentrate on the unknown words and gradually incorporate them into the "know" pile. I used this method in high school and when I went to Northeastern University where I graduated in 1972 and 1977.
I have 27 years of experience in the subject of language arts. This included teaching writing and correcting essays, paragraphs, and research papers. I taught grades 7-12 over the course of my career. My husband is a writer, and I edit his material. I believe my past and current experience qualify me for tutoring students in writing.
