I look forward to helping you with any and all matters pertaining to public speaking, college applications, standardized tests, advanced ESL, writing and literature.
I hold a Doctorate degree in English from Northeastern University, where I taught in the English department for more than ten years. In addition to the PhD from Northeastern, I have an MA in English from Boston College, a Graduate Certificate in Cinema Studies from NU, and a BA in Literary Studies from Middlebury College.
Currently, I am teaching composition, literature and public speaking at several colleges and universities. I have taught courses in ESL for the Harvard Institute for English Language (IEL).
My special fields are Shakespeare, drama, film, essay writing and general literature. I also have extensive experience teaching and tutoring high school and college students for general English subjects, SAT and GRE, college applications, ESL, public speaking, writing and reading.
My approach is relaxed and informal, but at the same time, I am focused on your improvement.
Please message me for more information.
I have been a student in higher education for almost 20 years. I have been a college teacher for more than 10 years. I have taught and been a student at various types of schools, from adult ed. programs to community colleges to large research universities. In each case, I have gotten a very good feel for the needs of different types of students and the nature of different learning settings. Because of my own educational career, I have taken many standardized tests, filled out many applications and had several interviews and campus visits.
My feeling is that all of this experience makes me an excellent person to give guidance and advice to students applying for undergraduate or graduate degrees (and to the parents of such students as well).
I have taught advanced ESL courses for the Harvard University Institute for English Language Programs and Southern New Hampshire University, and have a great deal of experience with ESL students in my other college courses. I enjoy working with international and non-native students since they show great enthusiasm. My approach combines speaking, listening, reading and writing in every lesson.
I do a whole lot of writing and even more reviewing and grading student papers! I read hundreds of drafts every year and help my students to self-edit and polish their grammar, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure and overall style. Fortunately, I am a bit of a grammar geek and find teaching it to be quite fun. Being able to proof and edit one's own writing is a very valuable skill since one is often judged by the quality and clarity of one's writing in this information and internet age. I have taught and tutored grammar and editing to high school students as well as college and graduate students and other adults.
I have done one-on-one tutoring for the GRE in Literature and the Verbal portion of the general exam. In addition to helping you review material and suggesting ways to study new material, I also provide test-taking strategies which are applicable to any standardized tests. Because I have gotten into graduate school twice--for my MA and PhD programs--and am a college-level teacher, I am familiar with these exams and very comfortable helping others approach them with confidence.
Since I have three degrees from three great schools* in literature, I think I can handle just about anything you need in this area.

In addition to being a great "eagle-eye" proofer and editor for your work, I can also give you many tips and tricks for learning how to better review and correct your work yourself.
I have been teaching public speaking at York County Community College in Maine and at Great Bay and Manchester Community Colleges in New Hampshire. My coaching focuses on helping students connect with an audience, use visual aids effectively, as well as giving feedback regarding voice, body-language and other aspects of presentation.
As a college teacher I can tell you how to be a great student because I know what works and what doesn't in my own students. We can cover all aspects of student skills, from homework time-management to effective classroom behaviors.
I've been teaching writing at the college level for well over 12 years, and have tutored many high school and middle school students in writing as well. It's definitely my area of specialty as a teacher and tutor.
