Hello, my name is Karen. I specialize in standardized test preparation including Language Arts, math and science skills. I am SAT, ACT, HSPT, COOP, SSAT and ISEE test preparation professionally trained and experienced. I have worked with students at the high school, middle school and elementary school levels as a certified district tutor, substitute teacher, special needs educator and one-on-one paraprofessional for over five years. I tutor students with an individualized approach to help with study skills, test taking strategies, homework assistance, organizational tips, retention tools and special needs accommodations.
I also have over five years of experience working at the collegiate level assisting students with the college admissions process, essay writing, career counseling, resume writing, job interviewing and social media presence. In addition, I assist students and their families, throughout the application, essay writing and testing process, to gain admissions to the college preparatory schools of their choice.
I use a patient and positive approach towards learning that instills confidence, builds retention and shows students that they can achieve their goals. I see the potential in each student and when you believe in them, they believe in themselves.

My daughter has always had anxiety surrounding math. When the word math is mentioned, I can count to 3 and without fail I witness an eye roll, a deep exhale, uttering "I'm horrible at math". I knew I needed a special person who is creative, patient, intuitive, respectful of my daughter's challenges, and inspirational. In short someone who excellent soft skills. Enter Karen. Karen has an internal radar for math anxiety and knows how dance around it and keep the student engaged. It's an art. My daughter actually looks forward to seeing her math tutor! I highly recommend Karen.
It is my absolute pleasure to unlock the "world of math" for your daughter in a very positive way! It is truly my privilege to be able to work one-on-one with your delightful daughter. Thank you for the opportunity to connect and make a difference in such a personal and important way in your daughter's life.
Karen has been doing a great job getting my son to understand his math work. She is patient, creative and has great energy. My son has really clicked with her. My son has been struggling with his math since we transferred him from a public school into a private school. The math work is definitely more intense and Karen is doing great a job getting him to better understand the concepts and do better at problem solving. Her patience and energy is helping with his confidence in math. I am very pleased.
Also, his latest quiz grade and test grade were significantly higher than his past scores. My son was son happy to get an 100% on his quiz and a 93% on his test. These are the highest scores he has gotten all year. And I believe that the tutoring is what has helped him better his grades.
Karen continues to do a great job with my son. She is always very encouraging and patient. She is working on my son on concepts that he will be introduced to this upcoming school year. Very happy with his sessions.
My son's grades have really improved since the beginning of the term. He had a little bit of a bumpy start, but has really turned it around with the help of Karen. She continues to be supportive, patient and encouraging. She has a way of making my son understand the material and feeling confident with what he is doing. I continue to be very happy with her tutoring. I have referred Karen to another friend, who also is very happy with the results for her son. Great job Karen!
Karen continues to help my son with his Math. I am always impressed with her patience. My son can be very fidgety and can get distracted. But she is always able to gently reign him in. Since we transferred my son from public school to private school 2 years ago he was definitely behind in match and needed to bridge the gap. The math at his new school was far more advanced. Karen has definitely helped catch him up and continues to reinforce the idea that you need to understand why you are doing what you are doing and not simply memorize the steps. She is really teaching him skills that will help as he advances in Math.
I have used many tutors on WyzAnt over the past few years for 3 children. Some have been adequate, and some excellent. The reaction of my daughter to her first lesson with Karen was unique (my daughter is a sophomore in college). You could see the relief in her face in how much the tutoring session had helped her understand the subject material. With regard to Karen, she commented to me that she "loved her!". The subject she was having trouble with was accounting, a subject that Karen indicated that she had not tutored recently. This was not, however, a problem for Karen. She was completely prepared from the start. Karen went beyond simply helping my daughter memorize accounting principles. She showed her how to understand what was being asked of her, and how to study properly and effectively, and how to answer the problem accurately. She reviewed problems my daughter had in previous tests that she performed poorly on and gave her much more confidence with the subject. This tutor is exceptional and gets my highest recommendation.
It was my privilege to work with your daughter. She was eager, attentive, motivated, seeking help and open to anything. It brought me great joy to see that she realized she was capable of understanding accounting principles instead of feeling frustrated and worried about her college academic experience. When I received feedback that her final grade in Accounting went up significantly, I knew that she had a much more positive outlook towards her next Accounting classes, as part of her overall Business Degree! Way to go, keep up the good work!!!
I am in the seventh grade. I struggle with English so Karen comes and helps me. Karen is a great tutor because she is very smart and is always patient. Karen always helps me with the things that I struggle with. Karen helps me with my school work and essays. Overall Karen is an amazing tutor.
Karen has been a great asset to our daughter in math. Since she began with her, our daughter has raised her math scores a solid grade level and received positive comments from the teachers at school. They have remarked at how much improvement she has made in a short time. Karen has also been very helpful with issues pertaining to school and has helped us make some good decisions going forward. She is very knowledgeable of her subject and our daughter has benefited from her techniques.
I had class with Karen on public speaking. She is very knowledgeable and patient. She is also optimistic, open and very kind. I do recommend her as your tutor.
Karen is helping our 8th grader with SSAT prep. She was so warm and enthusiastic! At the end of the session our daughter, who had started out a bit apprehensive about the work, was smiling, engaged, and looking forward to the next session.
I feel honored to be chosen to be a part of such an important process in your daughter's education. Helping students prepare for the SSAT involves a level of commitment, motivation and maturity on their part. I thoroughly enjoy empowering your daughter to realize that her own potential is limitless.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I enjoy tutoring accounting classes of all types. I personally go beyond simply helping a student memorize accounting principles. I show students how to understand the concepts and how to study properly and effectively. I focus on how to tackle accounting principles accurately by breaking down the concepts in easy to understand, everyday examples. I promote understanding of accounting vocabulary with a "back-to-basics" style. I build confidence by using a very positive, one-on-one approach towards accounting that focuses on a student's strengths and helps them conquer their challenges, one at a time. I try to demystify accounting for students so they can reach their own potential.
I have taken several accounting classes, that were required as part of my business major and accounting minor college degrees. I also took accounting in high school, specifically because I always had a strong interest in it. I knew at an early age that I liked the subject altogether. That interest has only grown stronger over the years.
I am teaching several ACT classes at a private preparatory school in Massachusetts, to national and international students, as a summer workshop series in order to ready these students for their ACT exam in the fall. We study test tips, strategies, learning processes, practice drills and practice tests to hone their essay writing, grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.
I am professionally trained, experienced and have taught classes in every aspect of ACT test preparation. Specifically all of the quantitative math skills tested including pre-algebra, algebra and geometry. I have been tutoring ACT preparation using practice drills and practice tests along with supplemental math materials covering percentages, word problems, fractions, decimals, exponents, square roots, order of operations, positive and negative numbers, prime numbers, integers, factors, prime factors, multiples, polynomials, slopes, intercepts, area, perimeter, volume, circumference, pythagorean theorem, pythagorean triples, factorials, etc.

I have taught several ACT classes at a private Preparatory School in Massachusetts, to national and international students, as a summer workshop series in order to ready these students for their ACT exam in the fall. The courses included studying test tips, strategies, learning processes, practice drills and practice tests specifically for the Science portion of the exam. I have also privately tutored countless numbers of high school students throughout MA and NH using "The Real ACT" test preparation and study guide. The study guide is a comprehensive resource that includes science reading passages, charts and data tables with corresponding multiple choice answers. The study guide thoroughly covers strategies and tips towards using critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving to teach students to utilize the "process of elimination" method to arrive at best-choice answers for success on the ACT exam. Without the study guide approach, students feel very unprepared to take the exam and do not usually achieve their best results.
I have a business administration degree from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH. I also hold a bachelor of science degree in business management from Southern New Hampshire University, Manchester, NH. I have been working in the field of business in NH and MA for over twenty-five years in education, college counseling, career services, administration, business to business sales, management, public relations, and marketing. I own my own full-time tutoring business.
I have worked full-time for five years as a career advisor and career services specialist at the collegiate level. I have assisted hundreds of graduates and pre-graduates gain internship experience and full-time or part-time work in their field of study. I also provide interviewing tips, mock interview practice, cover letter and thank you note writing, resume writing, job search methods, networking skills and social media profiles.
I have been a College Career Counselor for six years helping students determine their career and educational plans for success in their chosen field. Discussing further education at many schools in the area is always a topic of the planning sessions. Reviewing the college applications, answering questions, assisting with essays, gathering supplemental materials to send with the applications, checking a school's criteria, curriculum and course offerings are also part of the process. This is a very big commitment that requires a lot of preparation and sound and informed decision making.
I enjoy being involved in that process and find it is key to successful career planning since the ultimate goal of education is usually career related for most students. It is hard to reach a goal without a plan in place no matter what that goal may be.
I am trained and experienced in HSPT/COOP test preparation. I specialize in verbal and quantitative math skills including reading comprehension and vocabulary. I use well-known study guides as comprehensive resources that include practice drills, sample tests, study tips, organizational skills and testing strategies to empower students to do their best on the exam.
I have six years of experience with elementary grades K-6 and 7-12. I assist students with a one-on-one individualized approach to help with study skills, test taking strategies, homework assistance and special needs accommodations. I am also HSPT, ISEE and SSAT trained and experienced; for students seeking private school admission.
I excel at tutoring in many subject areas including, language arts, reading, grammar, spelling, math, geography, science, history, literature, and much more.
I have six years of experience tutoring and teaching elementary grades K-6 and 7-12. I have worked with each type of math introduced to students from year to year and made sure to remain up to date with the curriculum. I use several different approaches to help students learn and retain math concepts, since math has to be learned and cannot be memorized.
I assist students with a one-on-one individualized approach to help with study skills, test taking strategies and homework assistance to lead to their success.
I specialize in teaching and tutoring all types of English, Language Arts and grammar at the K-12 and collegiate levels. I cover reading comprehension, writing, grammar rules, spelling, vocabulary, word pronunciation, root words, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, punctuation and sentence and paragraph structure. This also includes literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, projects and essays, college and preparatory school applications and standardized test preparation.
I specialize in teaching and tutoring all types of Language Arts and grammar at the K-12 and collegiate levels. I cover grammar rules, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure. This can also include writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, projects and essays.
I teach grammar rules with an everyday approach to help with a full understanding instead of just memorization. For example, lots of students have trouble with rules that involve the usage of commas, semicolons, apostrophes with regard to possession, issues with writing tense, correct usage of pronouns, issues with homophones, incorrect word usage in context called "malapropisms", compound words, transitional phrases for writing, sentence fragments, redundancy and worn out words. Just to name a few!
I have used handwriting techniques with many young students and students with disabilities as a full-time district tutor for five years. One particular type is called "Handwriting Without Tears" and it can really make a difference in a student's educational abilities. I have seen many students gain handwriting improvement and confidence through using this easy to learn technique. It is also easy to teach and fun.
I am experienced in test preparation, reading comprehension, essay writing, and quantitative skills in verbal and math. I am ISEE and SSAT trained and have focused much of my recent tutoring in that area of expertise. I use The Princeton Review as a resource to focus on helping prepare children and their parents for the exam as it is known to be the best ISEE and SSAT study guide available.
I have also worked as a district tutor for five years teaching in grades K-12 with all of their subjects. I love teaching and tutoring grammar, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, math, history and science.
I specialize in teaching and tutoring all types of Literature and Language Arts at the college and K-12 levels. This includes writing, reading comprehension, literary analysis, thesis statements, pre-writing exercises, projects and essays. Additionally, I cover grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure.
I use a very positive, individualized, self-confidence building approach towards reading, writing and study skills. I also try to kindle enjoyment in reading, which reinforces the learning of multiple aspects of the writing process. I try to help each student realize their own potential. I believe in the power of learning and I seek to instill that in others.
I have used Microsoft Windows for over ten years in a professional setting in my daily work. I find it to be a great tool with many helpful features and its ease of use saves time. I also find the help feature to be of particular value since you can look up anything and learn as much as you want to about it. I have used that to teach myself any advanced items that I was curious about. I like that the help feature can be very serendipitous.
Windows also has an intuitive user-friendly style with universal compatibility with Windows users everywhere. I have shared tips and shortcuts and explained its features to many colleagues and students who were just being exposed to it for the first time. It is very easy to share with others. I find that I have inadvertently become the "go-to" person for questions in each college that I have worked at.
It really allows the user to set up features that make sense to them with their daily needs; while letting you skip the things that are not of value for your particular usage.
I enjoy working with others to share my Windows knowledge in a one-on-one tutoring setting at both the collegiate and K-12 levels.
Since I am professionally trained and experienced in SAT and ACT tutoring for standardized test taking, I have the experience necessary to prepare students for their PSAT as well. I specialize in test preparation. It is one of my chosen areas of expertise. With each student, I focus on building vocabulary, practicing grammar rules, reading comprehension exercises, various math skill areas, problem solving, logical reasoning, standardized test taking strategies, organizational tips and study skills. My focus is to empower each student to perform to the best of their abilities, on any of the standardized tests, for their best success with their college placement decision process.
Preparing for these tests is of utmost importance to reduce test anxiety and to show students the basis of standardized test taking. Standardized test taking skills differ greatly from basic test methods that have been taught over a child's years of schooling. Both students and their parents benefit from understanding that the test taker does have some control over their test results, as long as they take the opportunity to prepare with study guides and tutoring expertise. Without this training many students take standardized tests not knowing that they can prepare, therefore, they end up retaking these costly tests, many times, hoping to better their results through familiarity, instead of preparation.
I have given lectures for four years at Hesser College. The lectures were two to three classes per term and 6 times per year. Each class had up to 60 students. Topics lectured on were interviewing, creating your career network, navigating social media, resume writing, creating your on-line business image, selling your skills on an interview and creating your 30 second elevator speech to best be able to present yourself and your skills.
Prior to my current full-time private tutoring I worked as a Certified School District tutor for over five years assisting students in grades K-12. I specialize in teaching and tutoring Language Arts with a focus on all reading and writing skills; including reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, paragraph and sentence structure, vocabulary and spelling. This area of study may also include writing assignments, special projects and various types of essay writing.
I find that reading comprehension can be difficult for students to grasp what they are reading, for so many reasons. Therefore, with individualized attention I can hone in on each student's particular strengths and challenges and use a very positive, self-confidence building approach towards their improvement and overall success.
I also try to instill enjoyment in reading, which reinforces the learning of multiple writing and communication skills. I focus on helping students realize their individual potential, since self-confidence is such a key component to an individual's learning abilities.

I worked in the Nashua School District as a special needs tutor for five years. I have tutored students of all ages with autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, emotional learning disabilities, illness, hard of hearing, teen pregnancy, drug rehabilitation and children in the custody of the state, just to name a few...
I also work at the college level and enjoy working with young adults who need individualized attention to build their confidence in their own abilities. I see the potential in each student and when you believe in them, they believe in themselves.
I use strategies and tools to make learning easier and that build confidence. When students start to learn with more ease it instills their yearning for learning and helps them to become a lifelong learner. Knowledge is always empowering and difficulties in learning are just challenges to be met individually.
I am a full fledged spelling and vocabulary word nerd! I truly enjoy teaching students how to spell in a non-tedious and productive manner. I use tried and true methods to show students how to spell by syllable, by learning the meaning of word roots or stems, prefixes and suffixes, patterns of words by origin and many more methods. These methods teach students to learn to "decode" words and not to focus on memorization only. They also learn words in groupings rather than trying to memorize lists of words with no correlation to each other. These methods make all the difference with retention and really build confidence in a student's abilities. In turn it helps to improve verbal and written communication skills. It also results in doing schoolwork more effectively, efficiently and accurately.

I have been tutoring grades k-12 for over 5 years including study skills, test taking strategies and various organizational tips and skills to retain studied information. I have assisted children with homework after school and during summers to also help retain studied information since it accumulates from grade to grade. I have been trained by the Nashua School District and have worked as a substitute teacher, a paraprofessional and a special needs paraprofessional. I have used those skills at schools in Hudson, Hollis, Amherst, Nashua and many of the surrounding areas at the k-12 level.
I assist students in increasing their vocabulary skills covering several different areas of need including: vocabulary lists targeted for SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE and HSPT standardized tests. I also work with age-specific "dolce" sight word Iists that supplement children's reading skills. I truly enjoy teaching students vocabulary in a non-tedious and productive manner. I use tried and true methods to show students how to learn words by breaking them down by syllable, by learning the meaning of word roots or stems, by recognizing prefixes and suffixes, seeing patterns of words by origin and many more methods. These methods teach students to learn to "decode" words and not to focus on memorization only. Through this work, students also learn words in groupings rather than trying to memorize lists of words with no correlation to each other. I also focus on using a Thesaurus as well as a dictionary to properly learn vocabulary usage, pronunciation, parts of speech, origin, synonyms and varied word meanings per sentence context. These methods make all the difference with retention and really build confidence in a student's abilities. In turn this basis helps improve verbal and written communication skills, which can also result in doing schoolwork more effectively, efficiently and accurately.
