My name is Kara and I am a plant biology graduate student at UNH.
In addition to taking classes and performing research, I teach biology lab courses during the school year. I teach my students scientific principles as well as logic in experimental design, writing skills, presenting and public speaking, and math through data analysis. I have also mentored several students one-on-one in my research lab, training them to read appropriate sources and use critical thinking to make decisions for themselves. Additionally, I have worked with high school students during summer research projects and assisted with an after school program for kindergartners. I am an athletic, active person who played several sports throughout high school, but also enjoy more creative pursuits such as drawing, cooking, and crocheting. I earned high scores on the SAT and GRE, and am ready to help other students excel on these tests. I have many years of practice in the math and science fields, and successful experience writing publications, grant proposals, and summaries for the public. Teaching students is a favorite aspect of my graduate career and I look forward to tutoring and being part of your academic success!
I attended a non-denominational Christian school for 3-12 grades. I have taken New and Old Testament courses as well as World Religions and Philosophy. I have also taught Vacation Bible School and been part of other Bible based events for children.
I have taken Statistics and Statistical Methods of Data Analysis. I utilize statistics in my own work as a biologist, and am proficient in Excel. I also teach basic biostatistics to my students in my biology and ecology labs.
I am a plant biology graduate student at UNH. I have taken numerous plant courses and also teach botany during one unit of my biology lab course. I worked for the USDA Agricultural Research Service's Horticultural Crops Labs for 2 years studying viruses in berry crops. I love plants and would be overjoyed to share that passion with you!
I grew up in a home with an artist and enjoy drawing and painting with watercolors. My favorite drawing mediums are charcoal and graphite. I have taken Drawing I and Drawing II courses, and currently practice for my own enjoyment.
I have taken nutrition and fitness classes as part of my college training. I also am a seasoned runner who mentors new runners. I study and follow advances in fitness and nutrition and use my science background to verify new publications and ideas. Taking ownership of one's health is something I believe in strongly and enjoy sharing with others.
My biology background is heavily linked with genetics. I have studied Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Phylogenetics, and Evolutionary Plant Genetics. I use genetics principles in my research work on a daily basis and also incorporate them while teaching biology labs.
As a scientist, note keeping is extremely important so that your work can be used by other members of the lab. A big key is LEGIBILITY! I have developed my own writing and have also worked with the students I mentor to ensure their handwriting can be read by others. Additionally, I require the students I teach in biology lab to keep an organized, neat, and readable field journal on which they are graded at the end of the semester.
I am a life long crocheter with experience with large and small projects including afghans, sweaters, scarfs, mittens, and hats, as well as lace. I have taught several new students basics stitches and have helped them through their first projects. Let me help you with your project!
Organic chemistry is a challenging subject for most students that is required by many scientific professional programs. I earned high marks in Organic Chemistry I and II during my undergraduate career, and as a biologist and biochemist still utilize many of those principles. Let me help you get through this course successfully.
As a scientist, I am periodically required to publicly present my work. I have taken seminar courses and participated at professional meetings, both presenting posters and giving oral talks. I also teach students the principles of effective communication and speaking while teaching biology labs.
I meet with first year college students frequently to discuss effective and efficient study strategies. Many students waste time studying in ways that are not effective for them and can be encouraged by discovering the way their mind is most prone to learn. I was introduced to a variety of study skills resources during my Introduction to Teaching course at UNH.
I am a seasoned runner with years of experiencing beginning with 4 years of track and field during high school. I ran hurdles and relays, as well as doing the long and triple jumps. Now I run long distances and help with NH Girls on the Run.
