I really enjoy teaching Algebra 1. I had to relearn many of the concepts to become highly qualified, and to teach it and, as I relearned it, I understood why some of them did not make sense the first time through. A lot of math understanding is actually language understanding, so I work to make sure students understand every word that I use or that is on their homework.
Algebra 1 uses every piece of math taught prior to that point. When a student lacks fluency in the basics, they often struggle with applying them in Algebra. I'm a practiced detective in finding what underlying piece of math a student needs to relearn. I have often heard my students say, "OHHHH!!!" and then become suddenly more capable, once I work with them to correct a misunderstanding about a basic idea in math. It is a beautiful sound.
I have an MEd in Special Ed. I've been a case manager at the High School and Middle School level. Many of my students have been coded with Aspergers or PDD of various sorts. I have worked at a private special ed school in Concord, which specializes in helping students with Aspergers. And I worked for years in the high tech industry, most recently as a technical writer, and worked closely with many adults who were very likely Aspergers. I do "get it". :-) And I know how to communicate and teach students who struggle with other teachers.
I am available to tutor the academic portions of the ASVAB test, as I'm a certified teacher and very qualified in both the English and Math topics that are on the test. These portions are what is used for your AFQT (the qualifying test).
I am also excellent at problems requiring pattern recognition and matching, and thus can help with the section on assembling objects. In addition, I can help you with test-taking skills.
I am not a qualified expert in the vocational portions (electrical, car mechanics, or mechanical). However, I managed to pass the questions they asked me... and I can help you understand the questions and how they are asked, given a practice test on those portions of the ASVAB. The vocational portions are used to help place you in the appropriate training program within the armed forces; you need to bring your own skills to this portion of the test anyhow.
I studied Biology at a college level years ago. I worked with students learning Biology at a high school level, who needed help in my assisted study, during the 2008/9 school year. I found that my knowledge of the basics of Biology are still applicable for students taking Biology at a high school level. Cells still have the same parts and, though there are more kingdoms of life, and arguments over whether there are 5 or 6!, the basics of classification are still the same. And so on.
I'm also able to help with study skills and the writing needed for Biology, including lab reports and the math needed to complete lab reports. Your teacher will have provided a guideline; I can help you follow it to produce a good lab report from your notes and results.
I'm WyzAnt-certified in elementary math and in reading. I'm a certified general special ed teacher in my state, also. I typically take students who are grade 4 and above, since that is my experience. I have taught students who are older but have lower skill levels, though, both in math and in reading.
I was fine in math as a child, but I distinctly remember struggling with some parts of it. As an adult, I still remember that, and can sympathize with young learners who need extra help. I've also studied different techniques of teaching math. As a special educator, I understand the need for concrete examples to promote understanding. I have many of my own manipulatives, and am skilled in creating and using physical models to promote understanding. I also believe math should be fun, and children should be laughing while they learn. I have many math games, and many silly but effective ways to explain concepts. When a child laughs while learning, the ideas definitely stick better!

The GED covers many topics. I'm proficient in several topics; please see individual topics for information on my skills in each.
Textbooks on GED preparation are available in public libraries and bookstores. You might already have the book and have taken the test and know where you're at and what you need to improve. That's terrific, because what I'd do to work with a GED student is have you get a study guide and take a practice test before we even started, on your own time, without spending a penny on tutoring. Then either you could look at the results and determine what you want to do, or we could look at the results together and decide which sections you needed help improving. Then we'd work together to improve your skills.
Geometry is a combination of a math class and a logic class.
Geometry uses all of your pre-algebra and algebra skills, and adds new facts about lines, angles, and regular shapes in both two and three dimensions. It also includes knowing and applying trigonometric relationships and the Pythagorean Theorum. That's the math part.
In addition, there are the proofs. This is the logic part. Students either love or hate proofs; usually there's no middle ground! Proofs require that you be a math lawyer, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the statement made at the start is guilty of being true, or false. It is a picky and precise process, and often frustrating.
I can help with all of this, and hopefully make it fun in the process.
English grammar rules are often a difficult topic for students. I can help you look at sentence diagrams and understand what's going on and what the rules are. I have resources to use in our sessions and to recommend. Since I worked as a technical writer for years, I'm excellent at helping you proofread your work and at explaining why the corrections need to be made, so you can get it right the next time.
I was an English major in my undergraduate years. I love to read, and have read many stories and books in class, and analyzed them. I've also been a special educator in English classrooms from 8th grade level through high school. I can help students in lower grades also.
I won't claim to have read everything, but I've read enough of everything to be able to help you understand your assignments. I've written enough papers to help you decide on a topic and find evidence in a piece of literature, or to discuss what you might compare between two pieces. If you let me know beforehand, I might even be able to read the entire text before we meet. Just give me a bit longer if it's a novel or harder to find.

I studied Spanish in high school and college, up through third year in high school and a 300 level class in college. I lived in a Spanish speaking dorm in college, though I only took one class. I recently helped a student start Spanish 1, and assisted him when, after about a month and a half, he was finally enrolled in the VLACS Spanish 1 class.
My Spanish is very useful for a first year student, or a struggling second year student, but probably not beyond that, and my accent is good for a non-native speaker, but not native. The benefit of me not being native is I do remember, vividly, where I had trouble when I learned the language, and what was new to me as an American English speaker.
I prefer to help someone in Spanish in conjunction with other subjects, for example, someone who needs mainly math but some help in Spanish would be great.

I am familiar with the materials that are on the SSAT test. I've helped one student prepare for the test, using a preparation booklet. As well, I've explained test taking specifically for the SSAT, and helped students prepare for taking tests.
If you need some quizzing and review, and reteaching on any area we find you're weak in, we can do that together. I can also help you understand the information on when you should guess on a question, and when you should not guess, and why.
Vocabulary is best learned while learning material that uses the vocabulary. And, material is best learned when every word in the material is understood. When I work with students in any subject area, we go over the words used in the material. I don't just give definitions. I work with students to understand the words.
For example, when I work with a student on the topic of fractions, decimals, and percentages, and converting between them, we discuss what the words "fraction", "decimal", and "percent" mean. We look them up, and examine where the words come from. We compare them to words the student might know, for example, that if you "fracture" a bone you have broken it, a "fragment" is a piece of something, and the word "fraction" comes from the same Latin word.
If a student understands the words of a subject, they are much more likely to understand the subject. Vocabulary is critical to understanding.
Along with my undergraduate degree in English and my graduate degree in education (including classes on teaching language arts), I worked for many years as a technical writer in the computer industry, honing my skills at writing. I'm very good at organizing materials, and have written everything from paragraphs to poetry to technical books.
