My name is Seth. I currently live in Manchester and work as a high school tutor, focusing on just about everything. I have six years of English and language arts teaching experience at the middle and secondary levels, and I specialize in helping students improve their understanding of and performance in essay writing through skill building exercises such as use of a detailed writing process, revising strategies, graphic organizers, and activities focused on developing mastery with expository, persuasive, and research writing. I also have experience working with students on college admissions essays, which have their own ins and outs to consider and practice.

I also have experience working with students to help them improve their analysis skills, mostly within the realm of literature and American history. I have in the past championed various active reading strategies and analytical processes that have made the process more manageable and smooth.

I pride myself in my sense of humor and easygoing personality, and I have a real passion for working with students. I relish the opportunity to work with students of various ability levels and interest areas, and I accommodate a number of learning styles and personal idiosyncrasies, given that I have some of my own!

I look forward to meeting and working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught a seminar that covered American history and literature from around 1877 through present day. As such, I have a good breadth of knowledge on the subject matter.

English

I have a deep understanding of the skills necessary to understand and use English for expression, description, and everything in between.

Grammar

I pride myself on my deep understanding of English grammar, and I use this to help students find the most effective way to use language to express their ideas.

Literature

I have a BA in English and American Literature from Brandeis University, and I have taught literature analysis for the past 6 years. While I have no read everything available, I am always looking for and engaging new opportunities to expand my portfolio of read authors.

With this said, I prefer to focus more on the skills necessary to effectively engage literature of any type, as these skills transcend the works themselves and provide students with the confidence necessary to succeed with any text presented to them in high school, college, and beyond.

Proofreading

For the past 3 years, I taught a writing intensive course in which I helped students use a cohesive writing process to plan, draft, revise, and finalize essays. I actively worked with students to proofread their writing, and I have a passion for helping students through this process to lead them to mastery in writing of any kind.

Reading

Given the impressive variety of written forms students encounter in school, developing solid, reliable reading skills is essential. Throughout my 6 years of teaching, I have helped students develop active reading strategies, analytical tools, and reflective checks that made any text seem much more approachable.

SAT Writing

SAT writing is all about being concise and effectively communicating complex ideas through correct use of the English language. Through use of examples and practice prompts, I will help students learn how to approach any type of prompt and successfully plan for and execute a stellar SAT essay.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary development is essential for effective communication. While expectations for vocabulary are often lax or unclear, helping students cultivate an enriched library of words they can use at any time will make the transitional process between educational levels a much smoother process.

Writing

Writing is my subject of choice. I have lead many students to a more comfortable understanding of the writing process, helping them develop the tools to approach any writing assignment with style and aplomb. I stress the importance of peer review, as my philosophy is that no writing assignment will be as successful as when the creator uses those he/she trusts to help perfect the final product.
