I have taught reading in the public schools for over ten years. I was a Literacy Specialist, Reading Specialist, Title I Tutor, and a Reading Tutor. I have a Bachelor's degree in elementary education. I achieved my highly qualified teacher status in elementary education. I specialize in multisensory reading, phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding (spelling skills), reading comprehension, and fluency skills. I am trained in Orton Gillingham, Project READ, Aimsweb, LIPS, Visualization and Verbalization. I pride myself in my ability to get reluctant readers to become successful and confident readers. I have developed many of my own methods of inspiring students to be motivated readers. Once I determine the specific needs of my students after an assessment, I can develop their personal reading strategy and plan. My experiences include teaching elementary, middle school and high school students.

I specialize in a multisensory approach to teaching reading and writing that employs visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic pathways to learning.

Helping students find success when they have struggled in the past is what excites me and motivates me to strive be a better teacher!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught students with learning disabilities for more than 10 years. I have worked closely with Special Education Teachers to learn accommodations and modifications for students with ADD/ADHD. I have extensive information from workshops on this diagnosis.

Dyslexia

I am trained in Orton Gillingham which is a multi-sensory reading program for dyslexic students. I have used OG for many students in grades three through high-school. Last, I have read various books on teaching dyslexic students which has helped aid me in my lesson planning and teach my students to the best of their abilities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education. I achieved my highly qualified teacher status in elementary education. Also, I have taught kindergarten, grade three and substituted in all grade levels (k-5).

Phonics

I have taught reading for over fifteen years to struggling students. I am trained and have extensive experience in teaching multiple phonetic-based reading programs such as LIPS, Orton Gillingham, Project READ and Wilson. I have created and implemented various phonics based lessons to reach even the most reluctant readers.

Study Skills

I have taught high-school and middle school students basic study skills. I have taken teacher workshops on teaching study skills and implemented these strategies with many of my students. Even though my students have multiple learning styles and difficulties, I have found various methods to improve their basic study skills.
