ADD/ADHD

Over the course of the 13 years my son was in school I identified learning problems, one of which turned out to be ADD without hyperactivity. When my son's school first tested him, they said he was fine. On demanding a second educational evaluation, his disabilities were clearly identified.
Unfortunately, the school conrinued to ignore his special learning needsw. I began to research the field, and determined that his needs could not be met in that school system.

At the beginning of fourth grade, we moved to another state. At once his needs were addressed. I was involved at every step, attending all meetings and participating in the formulation of all IEP approaches. With my help he made 3 1/2 years of reading progress in one year!

When he moved to middle school they were not as attuned to his needs, so I learned how to request testing and to insist on modifications which I constantly monitored for success.

By the time my son was in high school I was volunteering to take notes for other parents in their IEP meetings, and helping them write better IEPs to get get the teaching modifications implemented that their children needed.

I will give other parents the benefit of my knowledge of the system, and of teaching strategies adapted for the individual child.

Chess

I tutored elementary students ages 5-8 in Kensington and Exeter, NH elementary schools as part of after-school enrichment programs. Although no chess master, I enjoy teaching children to love the game, including board setup, the object of the game, the functions of each piece, and fundamental defensive and offensive strategies.

Cosmetology

I graduated with 1500 hours of cosmetology in 1988 from Portsmouth (NH) School of Beauty Culture. I passed the state board exam with a 93 and a 92 on the practical.

Dyslexia

My son had ADD and a reading/writing/math decoding dyxlexia. I supervised his education and home-tutored him until he was in middle school, as he did not get adequate special ed assistance until he was in fourth grade.

Collaborating with his sped staff, I helped develop modifications for his IEPs, which I monitored and advocated changes for when they didn't work.

I know reading will never be easy for these students, but with patience and interesting reading matter they can come a long way.

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutored my son through his elementary and middle school years. I had to relearn a lot of math that had changes since I had gone through school. He needed lots of work in phonics and decoding, which I learned from his teachers and special ed teachers.

If I had to do it again, I would acquire the curriculum resources I needed and would be ready to home-school him until middle school.

Elementary Math

Focus is on proportions and the similarity between fractions, ratios, and percentages.

English

A lifetime of reading for work, school, enjoyment, and self-improvement have given me a love of words and a facility with making them work together. A little practice writing can sometimes help a reader understand what an author experiences when he or she sits down to write for others.

I try to help students recognize what kind of writing is before them. The attack on a short story may not work as well with non-fiction. History calls for a big-picture perspective as much as it entails memorizing facts and events.

I think teachers and tutors are more successful when they first assess the strengths and weakness of their students, and then teach to the strengths instead of always focusing on the weaknesses.

NCLEX

I am a practical nursing instructor at InterCoast Career Institute in Kittery, Maine with multi-ethnic students from January 2012 to July 2012. I have taught classes daily. Tutored students daily after class at school in CAI NCLEX practice exams, pharmacology, nursing, and nursing math.

Nutrition

Nutrition is a component of all nursing education. As a registered professional nurse, I took a full semester course in nutrition and dietetics.

I have been supervising the diets of inpatient, clinic, and home care patients for many years. I am proficient in suggesting and implementing ordered dietary modifications for my home care patients.

In addition, I have taught basic nutrition to LPN nursing students.

Phonics

As the parent of a child with dyslexia, I had to tutor my son from kindergarten through the end of third grade. His school was not interested in helping him. To learn to read he had to know how to identify letters and letter combinations and sound out words. I attended his classes twice a week so I could reinforce the teaching he got in class. I also read to him every day until he was 15, and helped him with his course reading all they way to graduation.

Photography

My photography hobby started out with a Brownie camera at camp. I became the family photographer, using anything from my mom's old box camera, Instamatics, disc cameras, to my first 35mm manual camera at 16. Although I never had my own darkroom, I used the darkroom at Wellesley to make creative B&W photos. My first VHS camcorder weighed 11 pounds!

Now, of course, it's 35mm digital cameras, mini camcorders, and digital videocams. My specialty is landscapes and flowers, including time lapse photography of stars and plant growth.

One secret of good photography is taking LOTS of shots of the same thing, trying different apertures, shutter speeds, and angles. Another is never to be without a camera. Amazing things occur everywhere, and you have to be ready to capture them!

Proofreading

Learn what goes where and when and why. Improper punctuation can ruin a cover letter, admission essay, or report. Let students' writing reflect their brilliance, not their ignorance.

Special Needs

I have worked as a nurse with children with special needs for over 20 years, many of whom have hearing, vision, and communication impairments, ADHD, ODD, MR, and what is now termed Asperger's Spectrum Disorder. Each has an IEP either from school or from Early Intervention. My own son who is now a successful chef has ADHD and a reading/writing decoding disability, which I spent years researching and co-teaching with his classroom teachers and resource room specialists. I also volunteered in his classrooms until he was in high school. I know my way around kids who have no self-confidence or self-esteem.

Spelling

Spelling the English language is HARD! We get our words from many other languages. It's even harder for many adopting English as a second or business language. But there are tricks to help remember the spelling of the most common problem words. And sometimes knowledge of French or Spanish can really help!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
