I am a special educator, life coach, and former school principal. I have tutored for school districts and families, and have taught students from first grade through graduate school. I love teaching one-on-one; lessons are always tailored to each student to maximize learning and fun. At the University of Massachusetts, I designed and taught a successful class called "Motivational Strategies: Turning Kids On." I especially love to teach literature and language arts.

I believe that my primary job as a tutor is to teach students HOW to learn. I consider my work successful if I do myself out of jobs by helping students become independent learners.

Writing

I have a bachelor's degree in English, and a master's in special education. I have taught writing for many years, both to mainstream students and to students with special needs, in grades 4 through college.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a certified special educator for over 20 years. My professional licensure was for grades K-12. I have worked with students in virtually all of those grades.

Phonics

As a special educator with state licensure, I have taught phonics at virtually all school levels. In the beginning of my career, I taught reading to deaf children.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher particularly, I have taught study skills to students of all ages. My belief is that I need to teach children not just content, but HOW to learn.

Special Needs

I have taught special needs children at all levels for over 20 years, with the appropriate state licensure.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a 100-hour certification from ITTT, an international online ESL school.

Public Speaking

I began public speaking in high school. My specialties were extemporaneous speaking and the debate team. I have always been comfortable speaking in public, and was the annual town and school district moderator for my Vermont town for seven years.
