CBEST

I completed the CBEST in 2009. I worked at UC Irvine School of Education, and developed a course book for the CBEST. I use this course book to help other students pass the CBEST, tutoring them one-on-one.

English

I have taught English literature, language, and writing for 4 years at the college and high school levels. I'm trained in teaching, and using games in the classroom. I teach English in a way that allows students of all ability levels to enjoy it! English can be about more than just rules and format. It can be fun. It can allow you to express and explore yourself. I help you learn through activities and games tailored to your needs, level, and experience.

ESL/ESOL

My Teaching English as a Second Language courses were completed at the University of California Irvine. There, I learned how to teach using games, how to help students in grammar and linguistics. I applied that knowledge in one-on-one and group tutoring, then later in the college classroom.

Grammar

Grammar can be fun. I grew up hating grammar and if you had told me that I would be teaching it, I would have laughed. But after my TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) courses, I understood grammar and wanted to make it fun for others. In my developmental English classroom at the college level, I developed a series of games to help students understand and apply grammar. The games ranged from Part of Speech Relay Races to Sentence Fragment Baseball.

Proofreading

While in college, my first job was assistant editor for technical publications of the United States Geological Survey. As an English major, this was an exceptional introduction into the field of technical editing. As I teach classes, review papers, and provide detailed feedback, I find myself using those skills. I provide feedback to help students learn to correct their own mistakes. I am very thorough and detailed, and can also put work through plagiarism checks.

Public Speaking

My years of experience in teaching college success classes has taught me a great deal about organizing, presenting, and encouraging public speaking. I can give you strategies to help cope with the organizing and with the mental stress of presenting. There are ways to get rid of the "um" and the butterflies!

Reading

Reading can be a great joy or a tedious requirement. I love to read. I also love teaching reading to those who don't. Reading can be made into a fun game, and the more one practices it, the easier it becomes. I've tutored reading and read in libraries since childhood. I am willing and able to tutor all ages.

Study Skills

I have taught a course called Success at the College Level. It is a class that focuses on study skills, organization, and college preparedness.

For study skills, I taught how to take notes in class, how to read/mark up/annotate a text, and how to research additional information for difficult concepts. I also taught how to use the Multiple Intelligence Theory to learn material in the best way possible for each student.

Writing

Writing can be a challenging task. The written work I've published is only a minor part of the body of work I've written. Writing comes naturally to me, however writing doesn't come naturally to everyone. In teaching, I teach strategies that will work for all learning types. I've taught essay writing, research writing, and creative writing at the college level.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
