Hello everyone. My name is Alavi. I am a junior undergraduate at the University of Nebraska-Omaha where I am studying Biology and Mathematics.
My goal is to attend Medical school after I graduate. For the majority of my life I lived in Kearney, Nebraska where my father is a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Because of his rich background in mathematics, I developed the same qualities in academia. My father started teaching my brothers and I advanced techniques in math from an early age; I started to do trigonometry by the 6th grade. I was also in HAL (High Ability Learners) math courses from 3rd grade through 8th grade. Math Counts, a state mathematics competition held every year for 5th-8th grade students who qualified, was a big part of my life. I placed in the individual top 10 for districts ever year. My ACT score in High School was a composite 30 with a perfect 36 in the math section. Among only two other students in my grade, I took AP Calculus my junior year of High School and received a perfect score of 5 on the AP test. Throughout college thus far I have taken courses in Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics.
Through these experiences and my father's methods of teaching, I was able to become a great student and teacher. My younger siblings and peers always seek my assistance when faced with a mathematical dilemma. I have helped many of my friends with Math and was a part-time tutor to a neighbor of mine in Kearney. I have also helped grade papers for Mathematics Professors at the University of Nebraska-Kearney over the Summers. I enjoy tutoring students because I believe the mastery of a subject comes through many teachers and learning styles. It is a passion of mine to help spread knowledge to people who seek it. When a student has an issue with their homework or problem sets, I will guide them in a direction where the answer will not necessarily be. This way, they can recognize a pattern or equation that will help them to solve the problem without it being handed directly to them. Not only do I consider it my duty to teach a specific subjects thoroughly, I also try to ingrain good study habits that can be transferred to other topics in school. While I do take this position seriously, I make sure to keep a relaxed environment so that the student does not feel pressured while learning. I can always entertain a good sense of humor and study breaks are frequent depending on progress. Subjects I am proficient in include Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, and Calculus. Outside of mathematics, I can tutor in basic Chemistry, Biology, Geography, and History.
My only goal is to help you learn so that you have a brighter future ahead of you! I hope to hear from you soon.
