I am a graduate student at UNL studying nutrition. As an undergraduate, I was enrolled in a wide variety of nutrition, exercise science, and general science (biology, chemistry, etc.) courses. While I was not required to take college calculus for my undergraduate major, I excelled in math courses in high school.

As an undergraduate, I spent some time tutoring for the Nebraska Athletic Department. While there, I primarily tutored individuals for biology and chemistry. My general philosophy on tutoring revolves around relating concepts to the "big picture". I find that learning seems to occur more quickly when the real-world application of specific concepts is studied. Another technique I think is especially important is to have the individual I am working with "teach" me the material. One thing I never knew until I started tutoring others is how well you learn the material yourself when you have to actually say it back to another person. By showing someone else how to do something, it forces you to fully understand the material yourself.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

My formal training in genetics started with an undergraduate course in basic genetics. From there, I took a graduate course in molecular genetics and have started to do research in the area of epigenetic regulation. On a nearly daily basis, I read current publications as a part of my studies and continue to learn more about an ever expanding field.

Nutrition

My personal background in nutrition comes from my studies in my undergraduate degree program (Double major in Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Science and Dietetics) as well as my studies in graduate school (Nutrition). The particular area I study in graduate school involves a field called epigenetics, which is the study of how genetic regulation changes in response to varying conditions (i.e. the foods we consume)

Classes I have had in this area range from the core sciences of biochemistry and food science to more nutrition counseling type classes such as community nutrition. Also, as a dietetics major, I was exposed to clinical nutrition and aspects of food production in various settings.
