I have a broad background concerning my tutoring experiences, primarily in areas of mathematics, but also in physics. My educational background is very strong. I have a bachelor of science at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where I double majored in math and physics and minored in German. I then earned a Masters degree in Astronautics from George Washington University, participating in an off campus program located at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. I then received a Masters and PhD in Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, performing research in theoretical atomic physics.
I also have a strong tutoring experience. I worked as a tutor for highly gifted students at Lincoln Public Schools for over 5 years, working one on one with elementary and middle school students in the areas of math and science. I worked six months as an on-line tutor in several subjects of math. I have tutored many college students face-to-face in various courses in math and physics.
My teaching style was initially formed from my farming background of practical problem solving and keeping things simple. It was enhanced after spending over a decade as a college student gaining much exposure to the worlds of mathematics, science, and engineering. I enjoy meeting students, learning their specific goals, then developing appropriate strategies (relying on both my broad educational backgrounds and research experiences) to achieve the student's desired goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I feel very qualified to work with Algebra I students, not only because I have an extensive background in mathematics, but more importantly I understand the frustrations of having to work with variables (letters to describe quantities) instead of numbers.

In 7th grade, I not only enrolled in a new school, but was placed in an advanced program, so most of my classmates were older 8th graders. The frustrations of being surrounded by older students along with the difficulty of learning a new form of math really prepared me to sympathize with the frustrations of a student in learning algebra.

Algebra 2

I worked as an online tutor for tutor.com for six months (November, 2008 through April, 2009). I assisted students in several math subjects (7-8th grade math, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry), but the majority of my questions involved advanced algebra topics. The set of clients included middle school, high school, college, and adult students.

GED

I worked with one student for about 5 sessions, and he was successful in getting his GED. Ran into him a month later in a parking lot, and he informed me he now owns the company he was working for!

Physics

I have a PhD in atomic theory from the University of Colorado-Boulder (among the top 25 physics programs in the country). I do have some experimental physics experience, but my doctoral research was more focused on using computational calculations to solve problems. Also have much experience as a teaching assistant in physics.
As a bonus, I have a MS in astronautics from an off-campus George Washington University program at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia (research involved lunar gravitational models), so have extensive exposure to the engineering world and the U.S. space program.

Hello, I signed up for a WyzAnt tutoring account four months ago (August, 2009). I provide tutoring in physics and mathematics. As a Nebraskan farm boy with a two-year shift at a NASA center where the manned space program started out (Langley), and also performing graduate work in a physics department exploring the fundamentals of matter (Colorado), I enjoy the opportunity to share my... read more

Phenomenal teacher! — I contacted Kurt in utter desperation for help in Physics 212, College Physics. I was in a situation that needed extra attention in order to not only graduate, but graduate with an acceptable grade. Kurt understood my predicament and sat down with me twice a week ranging from 2-3 hours a week. He simplified problems for me in a way that I could understand better. Much of what we did and how he ...
