Hello - I'm offering individual and/or group lessons for beginners and intermediate-leveled players who are interested in improving their chess.
I have 3 years of chess coaching experience with kids from kindergarten through 8th grade, and am able to work with older students as well. I've been the Nebraska state chess champion for my age group twice, with numerous top 2 or 3 finishes as well. I've also won a number of other chess tournaments in Nebraska throughout the years.
All chess coaching that I do will be based on the individual student's existing knowledge of the game. For those who are relatively new to the game, I will begin by focusing on the basics - things such as notation, piece movement and value, simple checkmating patterns, etc. For students who are (or move) beyond the beginning stages of chess, we will focus on concepts such as opening possibilities, tactical thinking, positional play, and more.
If students wish, I have a number of chess magazines and other such resources which could be borrowed and used for further benefit. I have a chess board and pieces which can be used for the lessons, although I would highly encourage the student to have his/her own chess equipment as well!
A little bit about me: I am currently a senior philosophy major at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, which means that I spend a good portion of my time reading, writing, and being confused. I particularly enjoy reading Plato and Dostoevsky, and reading about the life and philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. My favorite chess player, cliche as it is, would have to be Bobby Fischer, owing to his creativity and relentless pursuit of victory. I also enjoy finding out about European history spanning from the ancient Greeks through the time of the Industrial Revolution.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have. I hope to hear from you soon!
