I am an MBA/CPA who has spent over 27 years employed in both private industry and public accounting managing accounting and financial matters with world-wide effect. Early in my career, I audited the Mt. Newman Iron Ore mine in Western Australia, the largest mine in the world. In the latter 1980’s I was the Controller of an Oil & Gas company in Houston, TX who along with other management members, grew the company from $20 million to $800 million in assets, and sold it for $1 Billion. In 2000, I was appointed Chief Financial Officer of a start-up software company in San Francisco and was one of the principals responsible for preparing the company for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Reflecting upon my career, a few years ago I became devoted to the idea of offering back much of my experience as a financial manager through teaching aspiring students. With my recent experience in Atherton, California teaching college financial and managerial accounting, coupled with my aforementioned broad management background in accounting and finance, I felt that I could bring a wealth of meaningful practical expertise to the educational environment. Again, perhaps sounding redundant, there is a point in one’s life where one who has perhaps been more fortunate, desires to give back much that has been bestowed upon him.
I cherished my years in learning and have three children who enjoyed the same, and I know well the role that education plays in the development of the whole person at whatever age. As a Controller, CFO or Audit Manager during the most recent twenty-seven years of my career, I was only as good as the people who assisted me. I spent many personal hours training or coaching managers and staff who reported to my office. Accounting is not always easy to grasp, so I believed in getting down to the very details in order for the concepts to be fully understood at the most meticulous level. Frequently, departments under my watch were assigned new principles, policies or procedures. Obviously, it was my responsibility to make sure that they were put in place properly and comprehensively. I spent hours making sure that I understood the full focus of what was being demanded before expecting my subordinates to get it. With new procedures, I often performed them myself before sitting down and working them through with the staff associates. As your tutor, I will be intimately familiar with the topic at hand and with challenges that you may encounter, so that I can best enhance your learning experience.
As a CPA, I am required to earn 40 hours per year of Continuing Education credits. Further, to maintain an enhanced knowledge-base of accounting to be able to practice in my profession, I am required to take classes in various accounting, tax, and audit topics, including a mandatory 4 hours concerning ethics issues. In addition to tutoring, I prepare tax returns and consult for companies or individuals with various issues in accounting or finance. I am currently an adjunct instructor in accounting at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston Salem, NC.
