I have tutored students in Math and Chemistry subjects up to twelfth grade for 15 years. Most of my experience has been in the Ft. Lauderdale, Fl area, where I was introduced to students that were completely overwhelmed by the subjects and thought that they had no chance to understand, much less pass the classes. After meeting the students and reassuring the concerned parents that all was not lost, we came up with an action plan that simply involved removing the stigma that Math and Chemistry are difficult and that my Teacher(s) are lousy. This is the most difficult hurdle to overcome. This hurdle is overcome by meeting the student where they are, calming them down, teaching the concepts, working simple examples, allowing the student to then work the example and steadily building their self esteem and self confidence through working more problems and getting them right. With these wins in the bag, the student's psyche starts to change and they then start to believe that they can do the problems once they are taught the concepts. This is the most gratifying experience for me as you see the cloud of darkness disappear from the student's eyes and then they start to glow with reassurance and hope that they can be successful in the subject. I have students that I helped who are now Engineers and Scientists, who when I met them had D's and F's in Math and Chemistry. After working with me for a few months, the lowest grade that any of my students received was a B, most pulled themselves up to A's. I am tremendously proud of this achievement.
