As an experienced educator with a Master of Arts in Spanish, father of two, and a Humanist, I firmly believe in 'learning by doing'.
I favor the "Natural Approach" when teaching a foreign language. This method emphasizes actual use of the target language from day one, as opposed to the traditional "Grammar Translation" method still in use in some academic settings. I strongly believe academic standards for second language learning should be based on proficiency level in the target language with the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Foreign languages can be a stressful subject for many students. Extracurricular activities can go a long way in easing an apprehensive student into a natural way of using and learning a new language.
Early proficiency promotes confidence and a willingness to practice and continue improving. I believe that with proper care and effort everyone can learn!
