I am a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. I have a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and a bachelor of science degree in political science/communications. I am currently working full-time on my Master of Arts (MA) degree in management with a concentration in Human Resource Management and would like to supplement my income by tutoring students. I have extensive knowledge in training adults and working with children through church and work. I can tutor students in social studies, English, history and communications which includes reading, writing, and vocabulary. I can also help students prepare for specialized tests in the above subject areas.

I am a native of Brunswick County, NC. My only child is teaching English and classroom skills to Korean teachers and other foreign nationals in South Korea. I am single and can work varied hours. I can tutor during school hours and evenings if necessary. I like to tutor students in the public library, on college campuses, churches or other public places. In certain instances, I will tutor in a home provided that a parent is present during the tutoring session. I am 50 years old. I work best with young students older than five, middle school, high school and college age students. I can provide work references and a resume if needed.

I have also worked as a Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs at Brunswick Community College in Supply, NC from 1997 to 2000, so I have experience advising and helping students in a college setting. I have tutored students in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. My tutoring methods include defining the needs of the student and creating an atmosphere where the student feels comfortable expressing their needs and concerns. I take the time to answer all questions and pace my tutoring around the individual goals of the student. Students learn differently and have varied learning styles, so I try to find the method that works best for each individual.

Over the years, I have continued to give my tutoring students relative information concerning college admissions, selection of a major, graduation requirements, financial aid and tips concerning living on campus and becoming a successful student. I also have personal experience with online college formats and can counsel students in this area as well. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree. Elementary (K-6th)

Over the years, I have tutored and taught students on various educational levels. I have been very successful teaching children as well as older students in various subjects. I enjoy working with students of all ages. I have tutored students privately aged K-6 in English, reading, writing and in some cases math. I have seven years of experience tutoring students in this age group. I have tutored them in after-school programs and by recommendation by word-of-mouth within the Brunswick County Community. The educational challenges that students face today can be stressful for those that need more individualized help in their various school work. Although I have spent a great deal of time working with high school and college level students, I have tutored children as young as six years old. Each student needs a tutor that is professional, patient, kind and experienced enough to recognize their individual needs and I have all those qualities and more. My goal as a tutor is to improve the academic skills of each student so that they can be successful in school and enjoy learning. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science/communications.

Political Science

I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1994. I have spent a great deal of time studying political theory and the American and European modern political process. It is essential that students are aware of the impact that politics plays on economics and culture of any society. The political process can lead governments to work for the benefit of its citizens. I really enjoy teaching this subject matter.

Public Speaking

As a business professional, I have over 25 years of public speaking experience. I have led seminars, financial aid workshops, conferences and presentations with audiences ranging from ten people to over three-hundred people. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1992. In the business and educational fields, I have utilized many sociological concepts such as population studies, trend analysis and social research. I have tutored many students in sociology with great success. I enjoy applying these sociological concepts to bring about solutions to challenging real-world problems.

As a professional tutor with many years of experience teaching in various subject areas, tutoring students in speech requires patience and skill. Students can master speech skills once a specified program of testing to determine what is the cause of this type of difficulty is performed. Sometimes the inability to hear words pronounced correctly can lead to speech difficulties. My experience in helping students overcome speech problems spans two years. I have helped over five students overcome speech problems by applying speech therapy processes that I learned by taking various educational academic classes. My students are then able to develop their writing and language skills with great success.

Study Skills

As a professional tutor, with years of experience tutoring students of all ages, I have developed an approach for the improvement of various study skills techniques. I determine the ability and needs of the individual student and design a unique plan of action to give each student the tools they need to improve their study skills in various subject matter. This approach has been very successful over the years. Each student learns differently and needs an individual plan to develop this particular skill-set.

Excellent Tutor (5 Stars) Mrs. W is an excellent tutor. We requested Mrs. W to help our son prepare for an English compass test for college admission. Rather than just helping him to memorize the material to pass the test, Mrs. W assessed his current level of knowledge and tutored him in the areas he was weak to help him pass the test and be competent in future classes.
