I received my undergraduate education from Kennesaw State University here in Kennesaw, GA. While there I worked as a freelance tutor in the Science and Musical Arts buildings. I provided one-on-one tutoring sessions to a number of friends and colleagues. Together, we would go over lecture and textbook material. In most cases, I would create mock-up assignments and quizzes/mini-exams to further aid the student and prepare them for the real experience when the time came. I was in charge of scheduling and heading several group study sessions, so I have experience educating a number of people at once. At KSU, my tutoring included lessons in general biology, cell & molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, histology, astronomy, immunology and music theory (application, instrumentation for guitar & bass, and composition).
I myself come from a long line of educators: my mother - a Georgia middle school teacher for 35 years, my aunt - who taught special needs children for 30 years, and my uncle - an assistant professor in art education. During my time at Kennesaw State University, I majored in Biology with an explicit focus on the field of microbiology. The broad area of study contains many sub-disciplines such as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, pathology and immunology. As a graduated biologist, I have been educated and trained in these various fields of study. Indeed, the size and scope of the discipline requires the need for many sub-fields of specialization. This is largely due to the abundance of the various assorted types of microorganisms such as: prokaryotes (ie. bacteria), eukaryotes (ie. fungi and protists), viruses and prions.
While in lab, we studied the morphological characteristics of various bacteria and viruses, examined growth features and metabolic strategies, reproductive cycles, and intracellular protein production as well as the hijacking of metabolic "machinery" by viruses for propagation. In pathology and immunology, we explored the body's reaction to housing beneficial microflora and sequestering/destroying harmful pathogenic microbes. While in food microbiology, we examined how microorganisms cause food spoilage and foodborne illness. Industrial microbiology provided us with a focus on the exploitation of microorganisms at the industrial scale, that is to say how they are used for industrial processes such as food fermentation, waste water treatment, and brewing of alcoholic beverages.
I attended and graduated from Kennesaw State University with a BS of Science in Biology. While there though, I spent an extended amount of time studying organic chemistry. My studies focused on the structure, properties, synthesis and reactions of basic organic compounds using modern structural and mechanical theories. The outcome of my studies were as such:
Applied the IUPAC system of nomenclature to organic molecules containing the alkane, alkyl
halide, alcohol, alkene, alkyne, ether, aldehyde, ketone, ester, amide, carboxylic acid, acid
chloride, anhydride and other functional groups including stereochemical designations for
alkenes and stereocenters.
Recalled and employed reactions of organic molecules including the synthesis and reactions of
alkanes, alkenes, alkyl halides, alkynes, alcohols, arenes, organometallic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, esters, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid derivatives and amines.
Learned and utilized mechanisms of organic reactions.
Showed applications of organic reactions in multi-step synthesises.
Explained how physical properties correlate to molecular structure of organic molecules,
using infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
Interpreted data from various types of spectroscopic analysis of molecules.
