I am a certified middle and high school math teacher that has taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra for 5 years. I've taught students from a variety and diverse set of backgrounds - from the inner-city of New Orleans to the suburbs of South Carolina. Therefore, if you think you are a different type of learner and math isn't "clicking", most likely, I've seen and taught someone like you. During my tenure of teaching, I used a variety of learning methods - visual, auditory, and kinesthetic - in order for my students to succeed. My greatest successes have been through breaking down hard concepts into small steps, using games to motivate students to learn and practice, and being a continual student myself. If a student or group of students are not mastering the material, I go back and re-visit how I could teach the skill differently. I believe that I haven't been successful until my students are successful with math.

In addition to teaching, I've tutored students at their homes during the summer, led an after school tutoring program in New Orleans, and taught a Math "summer camp" or summer session for two years in South Carolina.

I plan to stay in education because it is something I truly enjoy doing. However, I recently moved to North Carolina to be close to family, take the GRE, and apply to graduate schools in the area. While this process is going on, I'd be more than willing to remain educating students through tutoring. Let me know how I can help you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am currently an ACT Math tutor at a local tutoring agency in Raleigh. While helping these students, I've realized that mostly all, if not every question I've encountered are topics I've taught in the classroom over the past 5 years. The skills covered in this test I am quite familiar with.

Algebra 1

I've taught honors Algebra for 3 years as well as tutored students outside of school who needed assistance. It's my favorite subject to teach.

Algebra 2

Having taught honors Algebra for three years, which covers half of the material in an Algebra 2 class, has made me comfortable with tutoring students in Algebra 2. I've now tutored several students in the subject and am quite familiar with the topics covered in the course.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past 6 months, I have worked at a tutoring center in addition to WyzAnt. I have worked with a variety of different ages from five-year old children to sophomores in high school. While working with small kids, I have learned a variety of different methods in order to raise their achievement in elementary education. We have worked together on phonics, reading, different grammar and writing rules, as well as elementary math. Teaching middle school math for five years helps with knowing elementary math inside and out. I enjoy breaking down these concepts even further into simple steps for the smaller children to understand.

Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra is the subject I have taught all 5 years that I've been a teacher. I've taught the subject in two states as well as with the Common Core; therefore, I am familiar with a bunch of different standards! Breaking down the topics into small steps and using games have led to my students seeing the most success in my classes.

SAT Math

I am currently an SAT Math tutor at a tutoring center in Raleigh. While helping these students, I've realized that most if not all of the math questions are topics that I've covered in the classroom. Therefore, I am quite familiar with the skills needed in order to master the SAT Math questions.

Writing

Being a college graduate, taking AP Composition in high school, and tutoring several students in writing has made me comfortable with the subject. Being knowledgeable about grammar rules, while realizing that writing is a creative art is important. I enjoy helping those who want to improve in this area.
