I have had over 25 years working with computers and various applications. This includes programming, specific applications for Microsoft, SAS, and other general computer operating systems. I have also taught at various community colleges and worked for SAS Institute. While teaching at for SAS Institute Inc., both in the US and Europe, I taught courses for a number of Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits and US government agencies including the CDC and the Census Bureau. While teaching at community colleges, I taught both curriculum and continuing education courses. I have also taught senior citizens how to use a computer. Many of these people have never used a computer before and had to start with keyboarding exercises.
Teaching methods need to be formulated according to the class consistency. In other words, I change my teaching style to suit my students. Beginners need someone who is extremely patient and they require repetitive exercises. Fortune 500 company attendees are usually advanced and want additional technical information often beyond the contents of the class. It is important to address the needs of all attendees while ensuring that those that are lagging behind are able to get the information and skills they need to make them successful. I have also taught courses for people whose native tongue is not English. Speaking slowly and clearly is of the utmost importance. Whenever a question is asked, it is important to repeat the question to ensure others heard the question and then answer. I find students appreciate the extra effort I take to do this.
