While it is very important for a potential tutor to know the subject that they are teaching, there is much more involved. It is one thing to have someone memorize it, and it's another to have a student absorb the information being learned. And that's where I come in.

Not only do I hold a BS in Journalism (you don't get much more reading and writing training than that!), I am also a manager who has trained many associates to succeed no matter what the challenge is. Moreover, while I was in college I spent one year tutoring my fellow students.

I know I have to make the person relate to whatever I'm teaching somehow whether it be personal experiences or plain ol' examples. Remembering is not enough. Understanding is the key.

When it comes to helping students in reading and writing, I like to get examples prior to the meeting so I may get an understanding of what is needed to help them. For re-occurring sessions, I like to have small exercises each meeting to see the progress.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated with a 3.6 GPA in Journalism. I eat, sleep, and breathe English. Additionally, I have experience in tutoring children in the subject.

Reading

Most children run away from reading. I know I did. There's so much involved as a kid. But I'm here to make it easier.

Vocabulary

Understanding words makes writing so much easier.

Writing

Not only do I have a degree in Journalism, a major that promotes advanced writing skills, I have also been published in national magazines and local newspapers. Writing is my life and I make sure everything I write is done to perfection.

While in college, I tutored many students in English and creative writing. Moreover, during my college career, I received numerous accolades due to my top-notch writing skills.

Has there ever been a time where you or someone you know swears they read over a paper they wrote, but still ends up with point deductions on their grade? It's more common then you think and here's why: After finishing a paper that you've essentially read parts of over a dozen times, your mind sometimes registers it as what you're trying to convey as oppose to what is actually on the paper... read more

I just wanted to say how excited I am to join WyzAnt. I understand that many students just don't get some things they learn right away and I am here to say you are not alone. I joined not only because I want to help everybody succeed, but I also know what it feels like to doubt yourself and afraid to reach out for help. So instead I'll reach out and grab you! There is so much knowledge... read more
