I hold a B.S. in secondary education and English, plus four years of graduate work in English and creative writing. I have three years' high-school teaching experience and five years' experience in teaching college composition and creative-writing classes. For the past ten years I have homeschooled my four children, currently in grades 4,5, and 10, with one graduate who is currently a college English major.

As a poet and free-lance essayist published in nationally-circulated magazines, I possess the skills, experience, and know-how to help students to prepare their writing for maximum success, whether the context is a classroom assignment, a college application essay, or a dream of becoming a published writer. I especially welcome students who seek constructive feedback for their creative-writing endeavors, and am available to conduct online writing workshops.

I love teaching high-school and college students in a one-on-one or small-group format. I also particularly enjoy tutoring via Wyzant's new online interface. Online technology enables me to work with students outside my immediate area and to accommodate students whose busy schedules make scheduling in-person meetings difficult.

American History

I have taught American literature in the high-school classroom, with emphasis on the historical context of each work. Additionally, I am developing an integrated humanities curriculum which dovetails the study of literature with the study of history; my current project is an integrated American history and literature course.


I hold a B.S. in Secondary Education with a concentration in English from Vanderbilt University, and have done extensive graduate work in English as well, at the Universities of Memphis and Utah. I have worked as an English instructor at the high-school and university levels; I have also done one-on-one tutoring at the university level, including preparation for the M.A. examination in English; and I have been a visiting writer in the public schools. My own homeschooled children have consistently scored above the 90th percentile in the verbal sections of the California Achievement Test, and above 30 in the verbal portion of the ACT. I also work as a free-lance writer, and as the author of an integrated, writing-intensive humanities curriculum for homeschooled high-school students. I enjoy the opportunities one-on-one teaching affords for helping students with critical reading, writing, and grammar skills.

European History

In addition to an undergraduate degree and classroom teaching experience in English, I have taught Western Civilization, from the ancient and classical eras forward, in a homeschooling cooperative-classroom setting. I am the author of an integrated humanities curriculum series which teaches literature in the context of its historical period, with emphases on music, art, culture, and everyday life in a given era.


I have taught literature in both public high-school and homeschooling cooperative classroom settings and am the author of an integrated humanities curriculum which emphasizes literature from the early myths to the contemporary era. I have also facilitated adult/continuing-education literary reading groups, and have directed preparation sessions for the English M.A. exam in literature. My speciality is poetry; my poems have appeared in such magazines as The New Yorker, The New Republic, and First Things, and my poetry collection, Brief Light, was published in 2012. I excel at helping students to improve in close-reading of both poetry and prose, and in asking the kinds of questions that lead to effective literary analysis.


In addition to my classroom teaching experience in literature and writing, I also have extensive experience in editing and proofreading. I have worked as poetry editor for the nationally-acclaimed literary journal Quarterly West; I frequently proofread and edit college students' writing; and most recently I have been employed as a proofreader for the publishing company Hillside Education. I have also worked as proofreader for a doctoral dissertation in theology.

World History

I have taught world history in tandem with world literature via the homeschooling cooperative classroom and online. I am also the author of a Western Civilization integrated humanities curriculum for homeschooled high-school students, emphasizing events in world history as the context for a particular era's literature. My specialties are ancient, medieval, and Renaissance history.


My teaching experience in the public high-school, university, and homeschool-cooperative classroom includes a range of disciplines related to writing: sentence, paragraph, and essay construction; advanced composition and rhetoric; and creative writing. As a published writer myself, with essays and poems in nationally-circulated magazines, I am well equipped to help students to examine the craft of their own writing, to be mindful of their rhetorical choices and the structures of their arguments, and to persevere through the revision process for a high-quality result.
