I have six years of experience in K-6 education, with the majority of my experience in first and third grade. I am extremely strong in literacy and mathematics instruction, as well as integrating the other subject areas into my core subjects. I can teach and adapt my lessons to all learning styles.
I have taught elementary math in a variety of ways. I have experience with Scott Foresman, Investigations, the SCOS Strategies and Indicators, and Excel math. I love to teach math in a hands on approach. I consider math to be my strongest subject. I have brought third graders Benchmark exams scores up by as much as 10 percentage points in just one nine weeks.
I have taught Fundations Phonics program to both first and third graders. I have taught detailed explanations of blends, digraphs, bonus letters, glued sounds, suffixes, syllabication, all six syllable types, and schwas.
I have specialized in teaching first and third graders the seven major comprehension topics including: main idea, literary elements, sequencing, cause and effect, fact and opinion, inference, and compare and contrast. I have worked with students on fluency and comprehension that are up to two years behind grade level. My experience in first grade benefits me in working with older struggling students, because I know the techniques to bring up their reading level and fluency.
I have worked with small groups of students on EOG prep in both mathematics and literacy. We have dissected test questions and brainstormed and implemented ways to attack the problems on the test. I consider study skills a major strength of mine.
I have taught Word a Day vocabulary for the past two years. I have seen great benefits in broadening student's vocabulary both in every day use, as well as, success on EOG exams. I consider lack of vocabulary a great weakness that can have the possibility of hindering an otherwise successful student.
