I am interested in tutoring children in English, writing, and reading. I have been a professional writer and have published articles in newspapers and magazines. I could also teach art since I have been a practicing artist and have done fine art and illustrations for publication, as well as for my graphic design business. I have experience in tutoring Hispanic children, and am very familiar with autism.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have raised a son (now 22) with ADHD, and have considerable experience in dealing with the NC schools. I have participated in writing my son's IEP. I also have knowledge of ADHD medications, and what did and did not work for my son.

I worked with him one-on-one, and helped him with his homework and test preparation.

Art History

I have a Master's degree (M.A.) in Art History from The George Washington University, and have written a master's thesis. My undergraduate degree was also (B.A.)in art history, with a minor in fine art. I also studied French and Spanish.

I have traveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and the west coast of Africa (Liberia). My then-husband was posted in Liberia with the International Monetary Fund).

Aspergers

My son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when he was seven years old. I have helped him cope with the disabilities, and have helped to enhance his giftedness. He is now 22, and is a very talented artist and is gifted in science. He wants to be a paleotologist, and I am helping him achieve that goal.

Autism

I am very familiar with autism, as my son was diagnosed with a form of it (Asperger's Syndrome) at age seven (he is now 22). I have taken two classes in High Functioning Autism at the college level. I have also read extensively on the subject as I have been trying to help my son go through life with this disability. I have emphasized his gifts, and have helped to minimize the behavioral problems he has faced.

I believe that until you have lived with autism on a daily basis, you cannot truly understand the disability.

Drawing

I studied fine art in high school and college, and have been a practicing artist. I also did illustrations for publication in magazines, as well as for my graphic design business.

Painting

I majored in painting in my college art experience, and also took many other art courses. I was a painter for several years. Additionally, I taught painting on the adult level for three months.
