Want success without all of the stress? With my help, you can achieve your goal: earn an A, get a grant, finish your dissertation, edit your manuscript, break writer's block, get into college or graduate school, become a certified teacher, improve your writing and speaking skills, plan your future, and gain confidence. I love the hard work that is weighing you down, and I love working one-on-one with students or professionals and on my own with my computer, so unburden yourself and contact me. I will listen to your needs and offer personal, professional mentoring or editorial solutions that you can trust and afford.

My experience and credentials speak for themselves. For over 10 years I have taught writing, oral communication, and literature at UNC-CH. For 20 years, I have served as a private tutor, editor, and mentor for students of all ages, levels, and interests. I have prepared aspiring teachers to pass the PRAXIS II Subject Assessments by teaching them to unpack prompts, understand the criteria for success, plan responses, and write well in timed scenarios. I have also prepared college students for graduate school. I have mentored over 40 students from underrepresented populations who were writing research projects for honors programs and graduate school applications. I love working one-on-one with people, and my clients appreciate that I not only know how to teach but also know how to listen and empathize. I know that academic work can be challenging; I have experience planning, researching, writing, and revising my own academic thesis and dissertation. When I tutor others, I convey the strategies that helped me and have helped my clients. My client base is diverse. I have edited manuscripts on topics ranging from German literature to mitochondrial dna. I have technical writing expertise as well. I have taught writing in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and business. I have maintained websites for departments at UNC-CH, created online learning opportunities, and helped non-profits and campus organizations through service-learning partnerships. Whether you are an individual looking for a qualified and compassionate tutor for yourself or a family member or a job seeker hoping to improve your resume, cover letter, or interviewing techniques, I can help you. I earned the Erika Lindemann Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation at UNC because I made learning relevant and fun. I look forward to equipping, empowering, and supporting you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

For my Ph.D., I researched the Reformation, Presbyterianism, and the growth of Protestant theology, ecclesiology, and politics in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I have worked in a church as a children's minister and now serve as an elder in a local Presbyterian church. I was raised Baptist and became Presbyterian, but I am open to the practice and study of all faiths.

Career Development

As an instructor at UNC for over ten years and as a mentor for students and professionals of all ages, I have counseled many people on how to identify and obtain a personally and professionally fulfilling career. I can listen, help you set and reach goals, help you write an impressive resume and cover letter, help you prepare interview responses, and help you develop needed skills, such as conflict resolution, team building, leadership development, computer skills, and written and oral communication.

College Counseling

Teaching at UNC-CH for over ten years and working with a variety of grant-based programs for para-professionals, I have counseled over 200 hundred students and many colleagues. I have listened to their problems and their dreams, helped them set goals and develop skills, and encouraged them in personal and practical ways.

English

I have a Ph.D. in English Language and Literature and over ten years of experience teaching reading, writing, and critical thinking to students of all ages and levels. I try to make English fun and accessible, and I do it while maintaining high standards. Whether you love literature and writing or hate them with a fiery passion, I can help you connect with the material and reach your full academic potential. I love working one-on-one with students, and they often say that I am the best teacher that they have ever had.

Praxis

For five years, I have served as the writing instructor for PRAXIS II Bootcamps sponsored by the North Carolina Model Teacher Education Consortium and Wake County's TEACH-UP program. I can help you learn how to succeed by teaching you the criteria for success, how to unpack a prompt, how to manage your time, how to organize your thoughts, and how to write effectively.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking in English Composition and Rhetoric classes at UNC-CH for over ten years. I also have a minor in Drama. I can help you overcome fears, gain confidence, improve the ways you use your body and voice, craft effective PowerPoint and Prezi slides, entertain as you persuade, or understand classical approaches to argument and rhetoric.

Religion

For my Ph.D., I researched the Reformation, Presbyterianism, and the growth of Protestant theology, ecclesiology, and politics in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I have worked in a church as a children's minister and now serve as an elder in a local Presbyterian church. I was raised Baptist and became Presbyterian, but I am open to the practice and study of all faiths.

Writing

I have a PhD. in English Language and Literature. I taught academic writing at UNC-CH for over ten years. My last two UNC writing courses focused on grant writing in the health sciences. I teach students and professionals how to understand the criteria for success so they can impress their readers and communicate both effectively and efficiently. I love working one-on-one with writers to help them learn by doing! My students find our sessions enlightening and empowering. They appreciate my professional expertise and personal encouragement.

Great Tutor!! Very Patient!! — There are way too many great adjectives that I could use to describe Julie. She is very patient and challenges you to dig deeper in your thinking. I was stressed out trying to do this writing assignment on my own and was about to give up. After leaving my first lesson with Julie I knew I everything was going to be ok. She was very reassuring and understanding of my anxiety. When I was trying to me ...
