I am a certified Elementary Teacher who teaches all subjects. I also am certified to teach up to 9th grade Language Arts. I have been teaching for 8 years, and I would have to say my favorite subjects are science and language arts. I enjoy making my lessons hands-on and fun. I always learned better as a child when the lesson was interactive. As for my tutoring experience, I tutor students who are struggling in my class. I usually give them an assessment for their grade level and the subject they need help with. Then I design lessons to target their weaknesses. I use the North Carolina Common Core and Essential Standards as my guide to know what to teach my students. There are very many resources I use to help a student succeed. Education is not one dimensional. You have to look at the learner's strengths, weaknesses, interests, and learning style to teach effectively.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach with a North Carolina license. It includes K-6 general education and 9th grade language arts. I currently teach 1st grade.

ESL/ESOL

I teach basic education to my students, but I also teach English to my non-native students. I am licensed in Elementary Education and teaching English is a part of that.

Grammar

I teach grammar every day as an elementary teacher. I am also certified as a K-6 educator.

Phonics

I teach phonics everyday as a 1st grade teacher. Usually I assess the student to see what they know according to their grade requirements. I am also a certified general education teacher.

Proofreading

I teach my students how to write sentences and put them together to make paragraphs. I then teach them how to correct what they wrote. I also go back and help them make the corrections needed.

Reading

Reading is part of the curricula I teach every day. Students are taught skills and strategies to help them become fluent readers and critical thinkers.

Spelling

Spelling is very important and I work with my students every day on it. I play games with them to help retain the spelling of the words. I also give them different skills and strategies to practice at home to help them memorize the words.

Study Skills

As a teacher I teach my students how to study. I will look at a subject and decide the best way to learn it. I will work with the student to see what they prefer. I also tutor older students in my family on how to study.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is an important part of reading. I teach my students the words and then come up with fun activities to help them remember what they learned. I also make sure they can use the words in a way they can relate to. I help them find the words in the reading so they can understand how it can be used.

Writing

Writing is very important. I teach my students to put into words their thoughts and feelings. Then I show them how to do it correctly and in a fun way. If a student can write well in the younger years they will be ahead of a good percentage of other students.
