Hello! Let me share a little about myself. My name is Michelle, and I am currently an undergraduate student at Duke University with experience tutoring students from the elementary level all the way to the high school level.
Naturally, as I am a college student, my experience with high school standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, AP tests is still fresh in my memory, as well as the strategies I used to take the tests. Though I have an ACT Composite score of 35 (English: 35; Reading: 33; Math: 35; Science: 36) and regular score of 34, as well as SAT Subject Test scores of 800 for Math II and 770 for US History, I did not get these scores on the first try. They were very much the result of test-taking skills that I found to be particular to each test and test section, because although a student's natural intelligence impacts their test scores, how a student approaches certain tests, sections, and problems is equally important. What I would work on with any student wishing to improve a standardized test score is, firstly, the test material itself - making sure every concept is completely understood - and, secondly, the best strategies for taking the test.
With regards to my tutoring experience, I have worked as a tutor through America Reads and America Counts, so I understand the importance working to meet and exceed standards and requirements while also maintaining an encouraging learning atmosphere. Whether it is helping a second grader with grammar or working on algebra word problem with a ninth grader, I know how to work with students of many different ages and learning styles. I generally teach students one on one, but I have experience teaching classes of 10+ students.
I am also an experienced swim instructor as I have worked with children from 3 to 14 years of age on improving basic skills and perfecting stroke technique.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or are interested in setting up a session! I tutor on Duke's campus in the library.
