I have a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Arizona State University and a master's degree in Medical Science from the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
I am primarily interested in the sciences but I am happy to help in a variety of subjects. I have tutored students both independently and through institutions for many years. I am well aware that the same study methods do not work for all students and I have a variety of methods that I am happy to teach, I will keep trying until we find the best method for you.
I have worked with students of all ages, from nannying toddlers and helping them study ahead of their grade level, and working with struggling junior high/ high school students, to college & graduate students, and even adults. I lived in Japan for 2 years and taught private lessons and small group classes where I formulated the curriculum, activities, quizzes and take home assignments. The classes were not only educational and challenging, but they were fun too.
I know personally how challenging school can be. I have been there, I have survived and succeeded, and I would love to help you get there too. I can help any age student with study skills and can help develop effective study plans and schedules to help you ace your exams.
I look forward to working with you towards a brighter future!
P.S. I'm new to the Durham/Chapel Hill area. I tutored extensively in Miami, FL for the past few years - don't let reviews confuse you about my location!
I have volunteered in elementary classrooms for subject test preparation, spelling test prep., science projects and individualized tutoring. I am very familiar with ways that children learn and can break complex ideas down into more simple language to help them undertand. One example is that I explain medical diagnoses and surgical procedures to small children as part of a volunteer job in a local hospital. Before deciding to study health & medicine I was studying to be an Elementary School teacher. I have tutored several younger students and helped them learn better study skills and improve their grades. I was a nanny for many years and spent a lot of time doing after school homework with the kids.
I took Basic Medical Genetics in my master's program and earned an A.
I lived in a rural fishing village in Northern Japan (Aomori Prefecture) while teaching English for 2 years (2009 - 2011). I am familiar with the cultural norms and have a basic understanding of the language.
I took the MCAT multiple times and am very familiar with the test. I studied on my own as well as taking professional study programs. I have several textbooks, my course notes, and am happy to help students prepare for this exam. I know how stressful it can be and I understand the importance of studying the right things to prepare. I can help students with ways to build up their stamina to prepare for the exam. Additionally, I can help make a strict study plan to follow in order to prepare in a given amount of time.
My master's degree included a course in Pharmacology, in which I earned an A.
When I was in grade school I never liked science, even though I won "Science Student of the Year Award" from the district in 5th grade. I didn't think I was good at science, and I dreaded it in college. But looking back over old report cards I realized that I always did well in science. I must have had a mental block about it. Now that I've been through college and grad school and am about to start Medical School I realize just how fun science can be IF it is taught right! I think it's very important to work with grade school students and find ways to get them interested in what they are learning. Chemistry always seemed "irrelevant" to me but after I realized how much it matters, and how practical it is, even in daily life, i found it so much more interesting. I believe that when students are interested in what they are learning they are far more likely to succeed.
I took 12 years of private piano lessons and am comfortable teaching beginning students.
In college I worked with professional at the university to learn study skills and find successful ways for me to study. I learned many different styles that I can apply with different students. I have used various methods with different students and will seek to find you the perfect study method; flash cards, flow charts, turning lessons into games, making simple songs, or creating catchy phrases to remember complex things. I made several lesson plans complete with work sheets and quizzes for previous students. I am confident that I can help you find a more effective and efficient way to study.
