I have a master's degree in Computer Science and a bachelor's degree in two fields, Mathematics and Physics. (The schools were Holy Cross College, and then Boston University Graduate School). I have been teaching and training children and adults in mathematics and computer skills for over 20 years.

I tutored children and adults in math in a transitional living situation for women who were learning algebra and geometry to obtain a G.E.D. I have also been a adjunct faculty member at University of Massachusetts-Lowell, teaching computer programming languages.

I worked for a tutoring company in New England, preparing students for their SATs, both the English and Math parts of the tests. Like most school material, this involved 'walkthroughs' of solutions of the problems in the tests, helping the student learn 'how to think through to the answer'.

I published a series of articles that explained technical topics, and learned a lot from the feedback from my readers. I find that there are many approaches to teaching when someone doesn't understand a concept. In one-on-one tutoring, no matter what the subject is, I find that nearly everyone can understand and master nearly anything, once the explanation matches up with the person's learning style.

I am looking forward to talking with you further about your educational needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I completed a bachelors degree in math and heavily depended on the principles of basic algebra for my other degrees. I like helping people understand equations and the tools for manipulating them. The principles of algebra work well in my daily life.

In the years since I took my courses in mathematics, I continued to learn and learn about it. I have attended summer sessions designed to explore the fun side of geometry, algebra, and numbers, in close contact with people who also think math is fun.

Algebra 2

I have a Bachelors degree in Math, which I used heavily for my other degrees. The principles of algebra work well in my daily life.

In the years since I took my courses in mathematics, I continued to learn and learn about it. I have attended summer sessions designed to explore the fun side of geometry, algebra, and numbers, in close contact with people who also think math is fun.

C++

With over a decade of experience programming in C++, and with experience in Object Oriented Programming (OOP) across other languages, I know how C++ and OOP are used in the real world. My C++ code is used in government programs in at least five states.

I also remember how I learned it all because it took a lot of programming examples and making useful code. Let me show you how to 'get your head around' the concepts.

Computer Programming

Nine years experience writing assembly language programs in a production environment, and decades more in high level languages, has given me the background to know how to program. Experience in teaching computer languages in school environments, plus a Masters degree in Computer Science, should help you feel confident that I can help you learn how to program computers.

Fortran

I have been using Fortran in my work, with over a dozen years experience. I currently use it full time in my work.

Microsoft Excel

I use Microsoft Excel in my full time job, use it in personal interests, and use spreadsheets for many different types of tasks. Excel is more than a "mature application" -- it is a tool that many rely on for all its features and for its reliability. A feature I use heavily is its ability to make beautiful charts.

I also maintain a collection of files to remind me how to do especially hard tasks in Excel. For instance, how to list all the tabs in a sheet if their names are long. While I use Excel 97 at home, at work I've been using Excel 2003 and now Excel 2007.

I do remember when the whole world was being introduced to the idea of spreadsheets like Excel, and I remember how the programmers and reviewers tried to explain the concept. Actually, the only way for one to understand, it turns out, is for one to just take a spreadsheet and work with it oneself.

I have gotten good at letting the student do just that -- "I let the student do the driving" -- they do the typing and working the mouse, while I watch and talk them through it. This works well in keeping the explanation at the student's pace, because with a spreadsheet, one sets it up, and then it hides the formulas and just shows the results.
