I read, write and speak German fluently and adapt my tutoring methods and materials to the goals of the student. As an editor and published author of American fiction, I can help you with English or German.

Preparation: three years of high school German, a BA and MA in German Language & Literature & Linguistics, including 18 months study in Germany; six years of college teaching; seven years of residence in Germany; 11 years of residence in French-speaking Switzerland.

My most recent classroom teaching assignment was German I at Roosevelt University in Chicago in 2009 (also taught elsewhere as a university German instructor for five years).

I worked in Germany in 1991-93 for a German firm and have continued as a freelance translator since then -- including six years with the United Nation's World Intellectual Property Organization in French-speaking Geneva, Switzerland and for Langenscheidt Online Translation Services and numerous other agencies in Germany.

German language and culture have always played a role in my life since most of my grandparents emigrated from different German-speaking areas. That exposure prompted me to learn more German in high school and continue on through a Master's degree at the University of California in Berkeley with a year of undergraduate study in Germany.

I am especially delighted that my grandchildren show an interest in learning German.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I have twenty-five years of experience editing a wide variety of material in English from technical, to financial, to marketing and fiction.

Reading

My work editing English and translating into English over the past twenty years have required a high level of reading and writing skills which I continue to use daily.

Writing

Working with motivated learners is always a pleasure!

In addition to language teaching, my experience includes extensive writing and editing work the last twenty years.
I have just published a first collection of short stories on Amazon.

I'm a beginner German language student, and William has helped me focus on the fundamentals of the language (pronunciation, grammar, etc.) in order for me to be able to maximize my self-study growth. He also brings creative learning tools and material to each lesson which helps the ...
