I am a retired high school math teacher, with 6 years of classroom experience who works best with nontraditional learners.
I provide a holistic approach to teaching that develops a student's math literacy and skills needed to pass the course. I have professional and personal experience teaching students who have had difficulty in the past. I work best with talented/creative students who are classified as learning limited due to dyslexia, ADD / ADHD or ESL issues. I provide guidance on study skills as well as math topics to overcome internal limitations.
Lessons are oriented towards the student's needs. Attention is given to 1) remediation - learning supporting skills, 2) reinforcement - review topics covered in the classroom/text and 3) enrichment - providing links to real world examples and uses of mathematics.
My approach favors the development of a child's math reasoning capabilities to create confidence and capability; my approach aligns with the Common Core standards. I avoid the 'by the numbers' or a cookbook approach to learning by providing problems solving solutions when possible.
I have six years of experience teaching at East Mecklenburg High School, where I enjoyed teaching algebra, geometry, discrete math, precalculus, advanced functions and modeling and basic statistics. Prior to teaching, I had a variety of roles in information technology.
