I also a certified secondary English teacher and taught freshman English, senior composition, beginning and advanced journalism, and newspaper production to students at East Grand Rapids High School. My journalism students received many national awards including a Pacemaker nomination.
I am a published author, having co-authored 4 books on the use of color in interior design for the Rockport Publishing Company. I also wrote the text and produced a photographic book about Newport Beach, California,for Twin Lights Publishing Company. I self-published a book on baking pies called "The Importance of Pie." For three years prior to moving to South Carolina, I wrote news feature articles for a daily newspaper in Michigan, The Holland Sentinel.
I received my undergraduate degree from Albion College with majors in art and English, and completed my Master's degree through Calvin College, with some credits from the University of Michigan. I completed 16 hours of post graduate study in journalism at Michigan State University.
As a professional teacher I've had experience teaching art at all levels from pre-school through continuing education courses. I taught award-winning students at East Grand Rapids High in Michigan for 12 years, and taught art education courses for prospective teacher candidates at Grand Valley State University for 8 years. Most recently I taught watercolor classes to continuing education students at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping each one achieve his or her personal best. I believe that the ability to successfully communicate through writing and through art ensures success in all future endeavors.
