I graduated from Princeton University with a degree in financial engineering (essentially statistics mixed with finance), and am currently pursuing a PhD in economics at UNC Chapel Hill. Yet, I started out as a chemistry major, so I also have a strong background in chemistry, having taken organic and physical chemistry as well.

I worked for three years as a university-paid peer tutor for my classmates in the subjects of introductory chemistry and statistics/probability. Thus I am very familiar with the material covered, as well as the common topics which give students trouble.

I specialize in chemistry (high school and AP/college freshman-level) and statistics/probability, although I have also tutored algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus.

I'm mostly free on weekends, although I can also work on weekday afternoons.

Send me an email and we can discuss what you're looking for, whether it be exam prep or help on a particular topic.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have significant experience in introductory-college and high school chemistry, having tutored the subject for 3 years while at Princeton. Chemistry was actually my favorite subject in high school (I participated in a number of competitions, 'research' classes, etc.), and I took organic and physical chemistry while in college.

Chemistry is one of the more straightforward subjects to teach, as there is significant physical intuition (which can be taught from labs or demonstrations) to motivate the formulas that students learn. Students often have trouble translating this intuition into solutions for problems. My focus is on facilitating this translation as well as building the student's confidence in problem solving, by using a consistent approach to tackling a wide variety of chemistry problems.

Probability

I majored in Operations Research/Financial Engineering, which had as its requirement a number of courses in probability.

Most of the common probability questions can be broken down into some form of combinatorics. Combinatorics is often poorly explained in the classroom, but is actually quite simple, as it only requires a bit of logic and practice to reformulate a math problem in the language of combinations. I have significant experience in this topic, as combinatorics is also a popular topic for mathematics competitions, something which I was heavily involved in throughout high school.

Statistics

Since I majored in Operations Research/Financial Engineering, I have taken a number of courses in advanced statistics. I tutored introductory stats as a peer tutor at Princeton, although I also have experience with more advanced topics such as statistical theory, regression, etc.

Very inteligent tutor! — Ray is very intelligent and has knowledge on a broader range of topics than other tutors. He was punctual and always easy to work with. He doesn't like to teach how until one knows why. This fundamentally changed math for my son and made it much easier for him to understand. He is polite and very patient. My son is difficult to deal with and he handled the sessions well. Ray understands math bette ...
