I am an experienced tutor and classroom teacher (university, high school and middle school) who enjoys working one-on-one with students. My teaching style provides strategies for proficiency and accuracy as well as a framework for creative problem solving and effective communication. I call my approach "free spirit, tough mind" tutoring.
With over 15 years of university teaching experience, I have worked successfully with a wide variety of adult learners. I have extensive experience working with students of all ages and stages of academic development. My experience includes teaching across the curriculum for home school grades K-8, and classroom experience in both public and private middle schools and high schools. From inner-city high school in Birmingham, Alabama, to translating at the UN in New York, to teaching college in Paris, at Rutgers U, Princeton U, UNC, U of Alabama, Marist College, Birmingham-Southern College, and a variety of private tutoring, I have enjoyed working with diverse cultures, nationalities and personalities.

I first began tutoring English as a Second Language in the late 1970s as a high school volunteer and I taught Russian immigrants in Denver, Colorado. In the 1980s, I worked for Dialogos International, a company based in Raleigh, NC. There, I provided one-on-one tutoring primarily for business executives and their spouses. In 1990, I taught Russian immigrants English for the United Way in Birmingham, Alabama.
In 2004, I taught graduate students ESL at Rutgers University using the target language. The "immersion" approach, or using the target language, is a methodology that transfers smoothly from one language to another. After teaching ESL in high school in 2006 in Connecticut, I received certification with a 100-hour intensive course in ESL. Following this training, I taught ESL full-time at middle school in North Carolina. My students made tremendous progress in a semester's time by being given the opportunity to create their own individual research projects on subjects or aspects of subjects that most interested them. In public school, I advocated on behalf of the students for teaching modifications to help them in their other subjects and participated in the state-wide project to revamp all the record keeping in accordance with No Child Left Behind legislation. Since then, I have coached professors and students in English conversation, writing and public speaking.
I learned French as a child attending French public school in Aix-en-Provence. Later, I attended lycée in Monaco whilst living with a French family. Since that time, I developed my bilingual introduction to the language by reading, studying and returning to France regularly. I taught French literature for Rutgers University in Paris (summer 2000) and received my doctorate in Renaissance French literature (October 2000). Since that time, besides tutoring and translating, I have had extended stays in France with my family.
